Yuganaddhasutta

Paṭipadāvagga Yuganaddhasutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ānando kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.

Thus have I heard. On one occasion, the Venerable Ānanda was dwelling at Kosambi in Ghosita's Park.

Tatra kho āyasmā ānando bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti.

There, the Venerable Ānanda addressed the disciples: Friends, disciples.

“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato ānandassa paccassosuṁ.

Friend, those disciples replied to the Venerable Ānanda.

Āyasmā ānando etadavoca: “Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā mama santike arahattappattiṁ byākaroti, sabbo so catūhi maggehi, etesaṁ vā aññatarena.

The Venerable Ānanda said this: Friends, any disciple or nun who declares the attainment of arahantship in my presence does so by one of these four paths.

Katamehi catūhi?

What are the four?

Idha, āvuso, bhikkhu samathapubbaṅgamaṁ vipassanaṁ bhāveti.

Here, friends, a disciple develops insight preceded by tranquility.

Tassa samathapubbaṅgamaṁ vipassanaṁ bhāvayato maggo sañjāyati.

As he develops insight preceded by tranquility, a path is born in him.

So taṁ maggaṁ āsevati bhāveti bahulīkaroti.

He pursues, develops, and cultivates that path.

Tassa taṁ maggaṁ āsevato bhāvayato bahulīkaroto saṁyojanāni pahīyanti, anusayā byantīhonti.

As he pursues, develops, and cultivates that path, the fetters are abandoned, and the underlying tendencies come to an end.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu vipassanāpubbaṅgamaṁ samathaṁ bhāveti.

Again, friends, a disciple develops tranquility preceded by insight.

Tassa vipassanāpubbaṅgamaṁ samathaṁ bhāvayato maggo sañjāyati.

As he develops tranquility preceded by insight, a path is born in him.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu samathavipassanaṁ yuganaddhaṁ bhāveti.

Again, friends, a disciple develops the path of tranquility and insight yoked together.

Tassa samathavipassanaṁ yuganaddhaṁ bhāvayato maggo sañjāyati.

As he develops the path of tranquility and insight yoked together, a path is born in him.

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhuno dhammuddhaccaviggahitaṁ mānasaṁ hoti.

Again, friends, a disciple's mind is seized by restlessness concerning the Dhamma.

Hoti so, āvuso, samayo yaṁ taṁ cittaṁ ajjhattameva santiṭṭhati sannisīdati ekodi hoti samādhiyati.

There comes a time when that mind becomes internally steady, settles down, becomes unified, and is composed.

Tassa maggo sañjāyati.

A path is born in him.

So taṁ maggaṁ āsevati bhāveti bahulīkaroti.

He pursues, develops, and cultivates that path.

Tassa taṁ maggaṁ āsevato bhāvayato bahulīkaroto saṁyojanāni pahīyanti, anusayā byantīhonti. Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā mama santike arahattappattiṁ byākaroti, sabbo so imehi catūhi maggehi, etesaṁ vā aññatarenā”ti.

As he pursues, develops, and cultivates that path, the fetters are abandoned, and the underlying tendencies come to an end.

Dasamaṁ. Paṭipadāvaggo dutiyo. Tassuddānaṁ Saṅkhittaṁ vitthārāsubhaṁ, Dve khamā ubhayena ca; Moggallāno sāriputto, Sasaṅkhāraṁ yuganaddhena cāti.

Friends, any disciple or nun who declares the attainment of arahantship in my presence does so by one of these four paths.
