Aṅguttara Nikāya 5.159 16.

Udāyī Sutta

Thus have I heard.

Saddhammavagga Udāyīsutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambi in Ghosita's Park.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā udāyī mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ desento nisinno hoti.

At that time, the Venerable Udāyī was sitting surrounded by a large assembly of householders, teaching the Dhamma.

Addasā kho āyasmā ānando āyasmantaṁ udāyiṁ mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivutaṁ dhammaṁ desentaṁ nisinnaṁ.

The Venerable Ānanda saw the Venerable Udāyī sitting surrounded by a large assembly of householders, teaching the Dhamma.

Disvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Seeing this, he approached the Blessed One, and after paying homage, sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “āyasmā, bhante, udāyī mahatiyā gihiparisāya parivuto dhammaṁ desetī”ti.

While sitting there, the Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One, Venerable sir, the Venerable Udāyī is teaching the Dhamma surrounded by a large assembly of householders.

“Na kho, ānanda, sukaraṁ paresaṁ dhammaṁ desetuṁ.

It is not easy, Ānanda, to teach the Dhamma to others.

Paresaṁ, ānanda, dhammaṁ desentena pañca dhamme ajjhattaṁ upaṭṭhāpetvā paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo.

When teaching the Dhamma to others, Ānanda, one should establish five things within oneself.

Katame pañca?

What are the five?

‘Anupubbiṁ kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo; ‘pariyāyadassāvī kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo; ‘anuddayataṁ paṭicca kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo; ‘na āmisantaro kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo; ‘attānañca parañca anupahacca kathaṁ kathessāmī’ti paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo.

One should teach the Dhamma to others thinking, I will speak in a gradual manner; one should teach the Dhamma to others thinking, I will speak with a demonstration; one should teach the Dhamma to others thinking, I will speak out of compassion; one should teach the Dhamma to others thinking, I will speak without seeking material gain; one should teach the Dhamma to others thinking, I will speak without harming myself or others.

Na kho, ānanda, sukaraṁ paresaṁ dhammaṁ desetuṁ.

It is not easy, Ānanda, to teach the Dhamma to others.

Paresaṁ, ānanda, dhammaṁ desentena ime pañca dhamme ajjhattaṁ upaṭṭhāpetvā paresaṁ dhammo desetabbo”ti. Navamaṁ.

When teaching the Dhamma to others, Ānanda, one should establish these five things within oneself.
