Chaḷabhijāti Sutta

Mahāvagga Chaḷabhijātisutta Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate.

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling at Rajagaha on Vulture's Peak Mountain.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then, Venerable Ananda approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “pūraṇena, bhante, kassapena chaḷabhijātiyo paññattā— kaṇhābhijāti paññattā, nīlābhijāti paññattā, lohitābhijāti paññattā, haliddābhijāti paññattā, sukkābhijāti paññattā, paramasukkābhijāti paññattā.

While seated, Venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One, Venerable sir, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared six types of birth: the black type, the blue type, the red type, the yellow type, the white type, and the supreme white type.

Tatridaṁ, bhante, pūraṇena kassapena kaṇhābhijāti paññattā, orabbhikā sūkarikā sākuṇikā māgavikā luddā macchaghātakā corā coraghātakā bandhanāgārikā ye vā panaññepi keci kurūrakammantā.

Regarding this, venerable sir, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared the black type as those who are butchers, pig-keepers, fowlers, hunters, fishermen, thieves, executioners, prison guards, or any others engaged in cruel occupations.

Tatridaṁ, bhante, pūraṇena kassapena nīlābhijāti paññattā, bhikkhū kaṇṭakavuttikā ye vā panaññepi keci kammavādā kriyavādā.

Regarding this, venerable sir, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared the blue type as disciples who live by thorns, or any others who are proponents of action or proponents of deeds.

Tatridaṁ, bhante, pūraṇena kassapena lohitābhijāti paññattā, nigaṇṭhā ekasāṭakā.

Regarding this, venerable sir, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared the red type as the Nigaṇṭhas, the one-clothed ascetics.

Tatridaṁ, bhante, pūraṇena kassapena haliddābhijāti paññattā, gihī odātavasanā acelakasāvakā.

Regarding this, venerable sir, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared the yellow type as householders wearing white clothes, followers of the naked ascetics.

Tatridaṁ, bhante, pūraṇena kassapena sukkābhijāti paññattā, ājīvakā ājīvakiniyo.

Regarding this, venerable sir, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared the white type as the Ājīvakas and Ājīvakinis.

Tatridaṁ, bhante, pūraṇena kassapena paramasukkābhijāti paññattā, nando vaccho kiso saṅkicco makkhali gosālo.

Regarding this, venerable sir, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared the supreme white type as Nanda Vaccha, Kisa Saṅkicca, and Makkhali Gosāla.

Pūraṇena, bhante, kassapena imā chaḷabhijātiyo paññattā”ti.

Puraṇa Kassapa has declared these six types of birth.

“Kiṁ panānanda, pūraṇassa kassapassa sabbo loko etadabbhanujānāti imā chaḷabhijātiyo paññāpetun”ti?

Ananda, does the entire world agree with Puraṇa Kassapa in declaring these six types of birth?

“No hetaṁ, bhante.

No, venerable sir.

Seyyathāpi, ānanda, puriso daliddo assako anāḷhiko, tassa akāmakassa bilaṁ olaggeyyuṁ: ‘idaṁ te, ambho purisa, maṁsañca khāditabbaṁ, mūlañca anuppadātabban’ti. Evamevaṁ kho, ānanda, pūraṇena kassapena appaṭiññāya etesaṁ samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ imā chaḷabhijātiyo paññattā, yathā taṁ bālena abyattena akhettaññunā akusalena.

Just as, Ananda, a poor, destitute, penniless man would be unwillingly dragged into a pit, in the same way, Ananda, Puraṇa Kassapa has declared these six types of birth without the consent of the ascetics and brahmins, like a fool, an unskilled person, an unwise person.

Ahaṁ kho panānanda, chaḷabhijātiyo paññāpemi.

But I, Ananda, declare six types of birth.

Taṁ suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.

Listen to that, pay close attention, I will speak.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato paccassosi.

Yes, venerable sir, Venerable Ananda replied to the Blessed One.

Bhagavā etadavoca: “katamā cānanda, chaḷabhijātiyo?

The Blessed One said, And what, Ananda, are the six types of birth?

Idhānanda, ekacco kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati.

Here, Ananda, someone of the black type is born into a black state.

Idha panānanda, ekacco kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno sukkaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati.

Here, Ananda, someone of the black type is born into a white state.

Idha panānanda, ekacco kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati.

Here, Ananda, someone of the black type is born into a non-black, non-white state, into Nibbana.

Idha panānanda, ekacco sukkābhijātiyo samāno kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati.

Here, Ānanda, some individuals, being of a bright lineage, are born into a bright state.

Idha panānanda, ekacco sukkābhijātiyo samāno sukkaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati. Idha panānanda, ekacco sukkābhijātiyo samāno akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati.

Here, Ānanda, some individuals, being of a bright lineage, are born into the non-dark, non-bright state of Nibbāna.

Kathañcānanda, kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati?

And how does one of a dark lineage come to be born into a dark state?

Idhānanda, ekacco nīce kule paccājāto hoti—caṇḍālakule vā nesādakule vā venakule vā rathakārakule vā pukkusakule vā, dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati.

Here, Ānanda, someone is born into a lowly family: such as a family of outcasts, hunters, bamboo workers, cartwrights, or scavengers, poor, with little food and drink, living with difficulty, where food and clothing are obtained with hardship.

So ca hoti dubbaṇṇo duddasiko okoṭimako bavhābādho kāṇo vā kuṇī vā khañjo vā pakkhahato vā, na lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa.

He is ugly, unpleasant to look at, deformed, often sick, blind, crippled, lame, or paralyzed, and does not obtain food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, dwellings, or lighting.

So kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati.

He engages in misconduct by body, speech, and mind.

So kāyena duccaritaṁ caritvā, vācāya duccaritaṁ caritvā, manasā duccaritaṁ caritvā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.

Having engaged in misconduct by body, speech, and mind, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in a state of misery, a bad destination, a lower realm, hell.

Evaṁ kho, ānanda, kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati.

Thus, Ānanda, one of a dark lineage is born into a dark state.

Kathañcānanda, kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno sukkaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati?

And how does one of a dark lineage come to be born into a bright state?

Idhānanda, ekacco nīce kule paccājāto hoti—caṇḍālakule vā …pe… seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa. So kāyena sucaritaṁ carati, vācāya sucaritaṁ carati, manasā sucaritaṁ carati.

Here, Ānanda, someone is born into a lowly family: such as a family of outcasts, hunters, bamboo workers, cartwrights, or scavengers, poor, with little food and drink, living with difficulty. He engages in good conduct by body, speech, and mind.

So kāyena sucaritaṁ caritvā, vācāya sucaritaṁ caritvā, manasā sucaritaṁ caritvā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati.

Having engaged in good conduct by body, speech, and mind, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world.

Evaṁ kho, ānanda, kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno sukkaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati.

Thus, Ānanda, one of a dark lineage is born into a bright state.

Kathañcānanda, kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati?

And how does one of a dark lineage come to be born into the non-dark, non-bright state of Nibbāna?

Idhānanda, ekacco nīce kule paccājāto hoti—caṇḍālakule vā …pe… so ca hoti dubbaṇṇo duddasiko okoṭimako.

Here, Ānanda, someone is born into a lowly family: such as a family of outcasts, hunters, bamboo workers, cartwrights, or scavengers, and he is ugly, unpleasant to look at, deformed.

So kesamassuṁ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajati.

He shaves off his hair and beard, dons the ochre robe, and goes forth from the household life into homelessness.

So evaṁ pabbajito samāno pañca nīvaraṇe pahāya cetaso upakkilese paññāya dubbalīkaraṇe, catūsu satipaṭṭhānesu suppatiṭṭhitacitto, satta bojjhaṅge yathābhūtaṁ bhāvetvā akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati.

Having gone forth, he abandons the five hindrances, the corruptions of the mind that weaken wisdom, and with a mind well established in the four dwellings of mindfulness, having developed the seven factors of enlightenment as they really are, he attains the non-dark, non-bright state of Nibbāna.

Evaṁ kho, ānanda, kaṇhābhijātiyo samāno akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati.

Thus, Ānanda, one of a dark lineage is born into the non-dark, non-bright state of Nibbāna.

Kathañcānanda, sukkābhijātiyo samāno kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati?

And how does one of a bright lineage come to be born into a dark state?

Idhānanda, ekacco ucce kule paccājāto hoti—khattiyamahāsālakule vā brāhmaṇamahāsālakule vā gahapatimahāsālakule vā, aḍḍhe mahaddhane mahābhoge pahūtajātarūparajate pahūtavittūpakaraṇe pahūtadhanadhaññe.

Here, Ānanda, someone is born into a high family: such as a family of great nobles, great brahmins, or great householders, wealthy, with great wealth and possessions, abundant in gold and silver, abundant in property and resources, abundant in wealth and grain.

So ca hoti abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato, lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa.

He is handsome, pleasing, and charming, endowed with the highest beauty and complexion, and he gains food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, dwellings, and lights.

So kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati.

Yet, he engages in misconduct by body, speech, and mind.

So kāyena duccaritaṁ caritvā, vācāya duccaritaṁ caritvā, manasā duccaritaṁ caritvā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.

Having engaged in misconduct by body, speech, and mind, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, he arises in a state of woe, a bad destination, a downfall, in hell.

Evaṁ kho, ānanda, sukkābhijātiyo samāno kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati.

Thus, Ānanda, one born of a bright lineage engages in dark deeds.

Kathañcānanda, sukkābhijātiyo samāno sukkaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati?

And how does one born of a bright lineage engage in bright deeds?

Idhānanda, ekacco ucce kule paccājāto hoti—khattiyamahāsālakule vā …pe…

Here, Ānanda, someone is born in a high family: either in a noble warrior family...

seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa. So kāyena sucaritaṁ carati, vācāya sucaritaṁ carati, manasā sucaritaṁ carati.

and gains food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents, ointments, beds, dwellings, and lights. He engages in good conduct by body, speech, and mind.

So kāyena sucaritaṁ caritvā, vācāya sucaritaṁ caritvā, manasā sucaritaṁ caritvā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati.

Having engaged in good conduct by body, speech, and mind, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, he arises in a good destination, in the heavenly world.

Evaṁ kho, ānanda, sukkābhijātiyo samāno sukkaṁ dhammaṁ abhijāyati.

Thus, Ānanda, one born of a bright lineage engages in bright deeds.

Kathañcānanda, sukkābhijātiyo samāno akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati?

And how does one born of a bright lineage attain the non-dark, non-bright Nibbāna?

Idhānanda, ekacco ucce kule paccājāto hoti—khattiyamahāsālakule vā brāhmaṇamahāsālakule vā gahapatimahāsālakule vā, aḍḍhe mahaddhane mahābhoge pahūtajātarūparajate pahūtavittūpakaraṇe pahūtadhanadhaññe.

Here, Ānanda, someone is born in a high family: either in a noble warrior family, a great brahmin family, or a great householder family, wealthy, with great wealth and possessions, abundant in gold and silver, abundant in property and resources, abundant in wealth and grain.

So kesamassuṁ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajati.

He shaves off his hair and beard, dons the ochre robes, and goes forth from the household life into homelessness.

So evaṁ pabbajito samāno pañca nīvaraṇe pahāya cetaso upakkilese paññāya dubbalīkaraṇe, catūsu satipaṭṭhānesu suppatiṭṭhitacitto, satta bojjhaṅge yathābhūtaṁ bhāvetvā akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati.

Thus gone forth, having abandoned the five hindrances, the corruptions of the mind that weaken wisdom, with a mind well established in the four dwellings of mindfulness, having developed the seven factors of enlightenment as they really are, he attains the non-dark, non-bright Nibbāna.

Evaṁ kho, ānanda, sukkābhijātiyo samāno akaṇhaṁ asukkaṁ nibbānaṁ abhijāyati.

Thus, Ānanda, one born of a bright lineage attains the non-dark, non-bright Nibbāna.

Imā kho, ānanda, chaḷabhijātiyo”ti. Tatiyaṁ.

These, Ānanda, are the six kinds of rebirth.
