Aṅguttara Nikāya 6.73 7.

The First Jhana Sutta

Devatāvagga Paṭhamatajjhānasutta “Cha, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharituṁ.

Disciples, without abandoning six qualities, one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna.

Katame cha?

What are these six?

Kāmacchandaṁ, byāpādaṁ, thinamiddhaṁ, uddhaccakukkuccaṁ, vicikicchaṁ.

Sense satisfaction, ill-will, sloth and torpor, restlessness and worry, and doubt.

Kāmesu kho panassa ādīnavo na yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭho hoti.

Moreover, the danger in sensual pleasures is not seen as it truly is with right wisdom.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cha dhamme appahāya abhabbo paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharituṁ.

Without abandoning these six qualities one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna.

Cha, bhikkhave, dhamme pahāya bhabbo paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharituṁ.

Disciples, by abandoning these six qualities, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna.
