The Discourse on the Consequences of Misconduct

Dānavagga Duccaritavipākasutta “Pāṇātipāto, bhikkhave, āsevito bhāvito bahulīkato nirayasaṁvattaniko tiracchānayonisaṁvattaniko pettivisayasaṁvattaniko.

Disciples, the taking of life, when practiced, developed, and pursued, leads to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Yo sabbalahuso pāṇātipātassa vipāko, manussabhūtassa appāyukasaṁvattaniko hoti.

The least consequence of taking life is that, when one becomes human, it leads to a short lifespan.

Adinnādānaṁ, bhikkhave, āsevitaṁ bhāvitaṁ bahulīkataṁ nirayasaṁvattanikaṁ tiracchānayonisaṁvattanikaṁ pettivisayasaṁvattanikaṁ.

Taking what is not given when practiced, developed, and pursued, leads to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Yo sabbalahuso adinnādānassa vipāko, manussabhūtassa bhogabyasanasaṁvattaniko hoti.

The least consequence of taking what is not given is that, when one becomes human, it leads to the loss of wealth.

Kāmesumicchācāro, bhikkhave, āsevito bhāvito bahulīkato nirayasaṁvattaniko tiracchānayonisaṁvattaniko pettivisayasaṁvattaniko.

Misconduct in sensual pleasures when practiced, developed, and pursued, leads to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Yo sabbalahuso kāmesumicchācārassa vipāko, manussabhūtassa sapattaverasaṁvattaniko hoti.

The least consequence of misconduct in sensual pleasures is that, when one becomes human, it leads to enmity and rivalry.

Musāvādo, bhikkhave, āsevito bhāvito bahulīkato nirayasaṁvattaniko tiracchānayonisaṁvattaniko pettivisayasaṁvattaniko.

False speech when practiced, developed, and pursued, leads to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Yo sabbalahuso musāvādassa vipāko, manussabhūtassa abhūtabbhakkhānasaṁvattaniko hoti.

The least consequence of false speech is that, when one becomes human, it leads to being falsely accused.

Pisuṇā, bhikkhave, vācā āsevitā bhāvitā bahulīkatā nirayasaṁvattanikā tiracchānayonisaṁvattanikā pettivisayasaṁvattanikā.

Slanderous speech when practiced, developed, and pursued, leads to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Yo sabbalahuso pisuṇāya vācāya vipāko, manussabhūtassa mittehi bhedanasaṁvattaniko hoti.

The least consequence of slanderous speech is that, when one becomes human, it leads to the breaking of friendships.

Pharusā, bhikkhave, vācā āsevitā bhāvitā bahulīkatā nirayasaṁvattanikā tiracchānayonisaṁvattanikā pettivisayasaṁvattanikā.

Harsh speech when practiced, developed, and pursued, leads to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Yo sabbalahuso pharusāya vācāya vipāko, manussabhūtassa amanāpasaddasaṁvattaniko hoti.

The least consequence of harsh speech is that, when one becomes human, it leads to unpleasant sounds.

Samphappalāpo, bhikkhave, āsevito bhāvito bahulīkato nirayasaṁvattaniko tiracchānayonisaṁvattaniko pettivisayasaṁvattaniko.

Idle chatter when practiced, developed, and pursued, leads to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Yo sabbalahuso samphappalāpassa vipāko, manussabhūtassa anādeyyavācāsaṁvattaniko hoti. Surāmerayapānaṁ, bhikkhave, āsevitaṁ bhāvitaṁ bahulīkataṁ nirayasaṁvattanikaṁ tiracchānayonisaṁvattanikaṁ pettivisayasaṁvattanikaṁ.

The least consequence of idle chatter is that, when one becomes human, it leads to speech that is not taken seriously.

Yo sabbalahuso surāmerayapānassa vipāko, manussabhūtassa ummattakasaṁvattaniko hotī”ti. Dasamaṁ. Dānavaggo catuttho.

Intoxicating drinks when practiced, developed, and pursued, lead to hell, the animal realm, and the realm of ghosts.

Tassuddānaṁ Dve dānāni vatthuñca, khettaṁ dānūpapattiyo; Kiriyaṁ dve sappurisā, abhisando vipāko cāti.

The least consequence of intoxicating drinks is that, when one becomes human, it leads to madness.
