The Powers of One Who has Ended Defilements

Theravagga Khīṇāsavabalasutta Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then Venerable Sāriputta approached the Blessed One. Having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “kati nu kho, sāriputta, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’”ti?

While sitting to one side, the Blessed One addressed Venerable Sāriputta:

Sāriputta, how many powers does a disciple with destroyed taints possess, by which he declares the destruction of the taints, saying, The taints are destroyed in me?

“Dasa, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

Venerable sir, a disciple with destroyed taints possesses ten powers, by which he declares the destruction of the taints, saying, The taints are destroyed in me.

What are the ten?

Idha, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aniccato sabbe saṅkhārā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti.

Here the disciple with destroyed taints sees all formations as impermanent through perfect wisdom as they truly are.

Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aniccato sabbe saṅkhārā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

Venerable sir, the disciple with destroyed taints, seeing all formations as impermanent through perfect wisdom as they truly are, is endowed with that power, by which he declares the destruction of the taints, saying, The taints are destroyed in me.

Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aṅgārakāsūpamā kāmā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti.

Furthermore the disciple with destroyed taints sees sensual pleasures as a charred heap through perfect wisdom as they truly are.

Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno aṅgārakāsūpamā kāmā yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭhā honti, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

Venerable sir, the disciple with destroyed taints, seeing sensual pleasures as a charred heap through perfect wisdom as they truly are, is endowed with that power, by which he declares the destruction of the taints, saying, The taints are destroyed in me.

Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno vivekaninnaṁ cittaṁ hoti vivekapoṇaṁ vivekapabbhāraṁ vivekaṭṭhaṁ nekkhammābhirataṁ byantībhūtaṁ sabbaso āsavaṭṭhāniyehi dhammehi.

Furthermore the disciple with destroyed taints has a mind inclined to seclusion, leaning towards seclusion, sloping towards seclusion, delighting in renunciation, separated from all states conducive to the taints.

Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno vivekaninnaṁ cittaṁ hoti vivekapoṇaṁ vivekapabbhāraṁ vivekaṭṭhaṁ nekkhammābhirataṁ byantībhūtaṁ sabbaso āsavaṭṭhāniyehi dhammehi, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

Venerable sir, the disciple with destroyed taints, having a mind inclined to seclusion, leaning towards seclusion, sloping towards seclusion, delighting in renunciation, separated from all states conducive to the taints, is endowed with that power, by which he declares the destruction of the taints, saying, The taints are destroyed in me.

Furthermore the disciple with destroyed taints has developed and well-developed the four dwellings of mindfulness.

Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

Venerable sir, the disciple with destroyed taints, having developed and well-developed the four dwellings of mindfulness, is endowed with that power, by which he declares the destruction of the taints, saying, The taints are destroyed in me.

Puna caparaṁ, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā …pe…

Again, venerable sir, for a disciple whose taints are destroyed, the four right exertions are developed and well-developed...

cattāro iddhipādā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā …pe…

the four bases of spiritual power are developed and well-developed...

pañcindriyāni …

the five faculties...

pañca balāni bhāvitāni honti subhāvitāni …

the five powers are developed and well-developed...

satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā honti subhāvitā …

the seven factors of enlightenment are developed and well-developed...

ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvito hoti subhāvito.

the noble eightfold path is developed and well-developed.

Yampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvito hoti subhāvito, idampi, bhante, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balaṁ hoti, yaṁ balaṁ āgamma khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’ti.

Furthermore, venerable sir, for a disciple whose taints are destroyed, the noble eightfold path is developed and well-developed; this too, venerable sir, is the strength of a disciple whose taints are destroyed, by which strength the disciple whose taints are destroyed declares the destruction of the taints, saying ‘My taints are destroyed.

Imāni kho, bhante, dasa khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno balāni, yehi balehi samannāgato khīṇāsavo bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayaṁ paṭijānāti: ‘khīṇā me āsavā’”ti. Dasamaṁ. Theravaggo catuttho. Tassuddānaṁ Vāhanānando puṇṇiyo, byākaraṁ katthimāniko; Napiyakkosakokāli, khīṇāsavabalena cāti.

These, venerable sir, are the ten strengths of a disciple whose taints are destroyed, by which strengths the disciple whose taints are destroyed declares the destruction of the taints, saying ‘My taints are destroyed.
