Disciples, these are the four exertions.

Katamāni cattāri?

What are the four?

Saṁvarappadhānaṁ, pahānappadhānaṁ, bhāvanāppadhānaṁ, anurakkhaṇāppadhānaṁ.

The exertion for restraint, the exertion for abandoning, the exertion for developing, the exertion for protecting.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, saṁvarappadhānaṁ?

And what is the exertion for restraint?

Sotena saddaṁ sutvā …

Having heard a sound with the ear...

ghānena gandhaṁ ghāyitvā …

Having smelled an odor with the nose...

jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā …

Having tasted a flavor with the tongue...

kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṁ phusitvā …

Having felt a tangible with the body...

manasā dhammaṁ viññāya na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṁ manindriyaṁ asaṁvutaṁ viharantaṁ abhijjhādomanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṁ, tassa saṁvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati manindriyaṁ, manindriye saṁvaraṁ āpajjati.

Having cognized a mental phenomenon with the mind, he does not grasp at its signs and features.

Since, if he left the mind faculty unrestrained, unskillful, unwholesome states of longing and dejection might invade him, he practices restraint, guards the mind faculty, undertakes the restraint of the mind faculty.

And what is the exertion for abandoning?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaṁ kāmavitakkaṁ nādhivāseti pajahati vinodeti byantīkaroti anabhāvaṁ gameti; uppannaṁ byāpādavitakkaṁ …pe…

And what is the exertion for developing?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti …

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhāvanāppadhānaṁ.

Katamañca, bhikkhave, anurakkhaṇāppadhānaṁ?

And what is the exertion for protecting?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu uppannaṁ bhaddakaṁ samādhinimittaṁ anurakkhati aṭṭhikasaññaṁ puḷavakasaññaṁ vinīlakasaññaṁ vicchiddakasaññaṁ uddhumātakasaññaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, anurakkhaṇāppadhānaṁ.

These are the four exertions.

Restraint and abandoning, Developing and protecting;

These four exertions, were taught by the Kinsman of the Sun;

By which a disciple, ardent here, may reach the end of suffering.
