Aggappasādasutta

Cakkavagga Aggappasādasutta “Cattārome, bhikkhave, aggappasādā.

Disciples, there are these four supreme confidences.

Katame cattāro?

What are the four?

Yāvatā, bhikkhave, sattā apadā vā dvipadā vā catuppadā vā bahuppadā vā rūpino vā arūpino vā saññino vā asaññino vā nevasaññināsaññino vā, tathāgato tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati arahaṁ sammāsambuddho.

Insofar as there are beings, whether footless, two-footed, four-footed, or many-footed, with form or formless, conscious or non-conscious, or neither-conscious-nor-non-conscious, the Tathāgata is declared the foremost among them, being the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One.

Ye, bhikkhave, buddhe pasannā, agge te pasannā.

Those who have confidence in the Tathāgata have confidence in the highest.

Agge kho pana pasannānaṁ aggo vipāko hoti.

For those who have confidence in the highest, the highest result is obtained.

Yāvatā, bhikkhave, dhammā saṅkhatā, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati.

Insofar as there are conditioned phenomena, the Noble Eightfold Path is declared the foremost among them.

Ye, bhikkhave, ariye aṭṭhaṅgike magge pasannā, agge te pasannā.

Those who have confidence in the Noble Eightfold Path have confidence in the highest.

Agge kho pana pasannānaṁ aggo vipāko hoti.

For those who have confidence in the highest, the highest result is obtained.

Yāvatā, bhikkhave, dhammā saṅkhatā vā asaṅkhatā vā, virāgo tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ madanimmadano pipāsavinayo ālayasamugghāto vaṭṭupacchedo taṇhākkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbānaṁ.

Insofar as there are phenomena, whether conditioned or unconditioned, dispassion is declared the foremost among them, which is the crushing of intoxication, the removal of thirst, the uprooting of attachment, the cessation of the cycle, the destruction of craving, dispassion, cessation, Nibbāna.

Ye, bhikkhave, virāge dhamme pasannā, agge te pasannā.

Those who have confidence in the Dhamma of dispassion have confidence in the highest.

Agge kho pana pasannānaṁ aggo vipāko hoti.

For those who have confidence in the highest, the highest result is obtained.

Yāvatā, bhikkhave, saṅghā vā gaṇā vā, tathāgatasāvakasaṅgho tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa.

Insofar as there are assemblies or groups, the assembly of the Tathāgata's disciples is declared the foremost among them, which consists of four pairs of persons, eight individuals. This is the assembly of the Blessed One's disciples, worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of gifts, worthy of reverential salutation, the unsurpassed field of merit for the world.

Ye, bhikkhave, saṅghe pasannā, agge te pasannā.

Those who have confidence in the Saṅgha have confidence in the highest.

Agge kho pana pasannānaṁ aggo vipāko hoti.

For those who have confidence in the highest, the highest result is obtained.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro aggappasādāti.

These are the four supreme confidences.

Aggato ve pasannānaṁ, aggaṁ dhammaṁ vijānataṁ; Agge buddhe pasannānaṁ, dakkhiṇeyye anuttare. Agge dhamme pasannānaṁ, virāgūpasame sukhe; Agge saṅghe pasannānaṁ, puññakkhette anuttare.

For those who have confidence in the highest, who know the supreme Dhamma; for those who have confidence in the Tathāgata, the supreme, worthy of offerings; for those who have confidence in the Dhamma, in the dispassion, in the peace, in the happiness; for those who have confidence in the Saṅgha, the supreme field of merit.

Aggasmiṁ dānaṁ dadataṁ, aggaṁ puññaṁ pavaḍḍhati; Aggaṁ āyu ca vaṇṇo ca, yaso kitti sukhaṁ balaṁ.

For those who give gifts to the highest, supreme merit increases; supreme life, beauty, fame, happiness, and strength.

Aggassa dātā medhāvī, aggadhammasamāhito; Devabhūto manusso vā, aggappatto pamodatī”ti. Catutthaṁ.

The wise giver to the supreme, concentrated in the supreme Dhamma, whether becoming a deva or a human, rejoices in the supreme attainment.
