Fitting Deeds

Pattakammavagga Pattakammasutta Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca: “Cattārome, gahapati, dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ.

Then Anathapindika, the householder, approached the Blessed One; Sitting down at one side, the Blessed One said to the householder Anathapindika: Householder, these four qualities are desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain in the world.

Katame cattāro?

What are the four?

Bhogā me uppajjantu sahadhammenāti, ayaṁ paṭhamo dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ. Bhoge laddhā sahadhammena yaso me āgacchatu saha ñātīhi saha upajjhāyehīti, ayaṁ dutiyo dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ. Bhoge laddhā sahadhammena yasaṁ laddhā saha ñātīhi saha upajjhāyehi ciraṁ jīvāmi dīghamāyuṁ pālemīti, ayaṁ tatiyo dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ.

May wealth come to me in a righteous way, this is the first quality desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain in the world.

Having obtained wealth in a righteous way, may fame come to me along with my relatives and teachers, this is the second quality desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain in the world.

Bhoge laddhā sahadhammena yasaṁ laddhā saha ñātīhi saha upajjhāyehi ciraṁ jīvitvā dīghamāyuṁ pāletvā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjāmīti, ayaṁ catuttho dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ.

Having obtained wealth and fame in a righteous way, along with my relatives and teachers, may I live long and have a long life, this is the third quality desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain in the world.

Having obtained wealth and fame in a righteous way, along with my relatives and teachers, having lived long and having had a long life, may I, at the breakup of the body, after death, be reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world, this is the fourth quality desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain in the world.

Ime kho, gahapati, cattāro dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ.

Householder, these four qualities are desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain in the world.

Imesaṁ kho, gahapati, catunnaṁ dhammānaṁ iṭṭhānaṁ kantānaṁ manāpānaṁ dullabhānaṁ lokasmiṁ cattāro dhammā paṭilābhāya saṁvattanti.

For the attainment of these four desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain qualities in the world, these four qualities lead:

Katame cattāro?

Accomplishment in faith,

Saddhāsampadā, sīlasampadā, cāgasampadā, paññāsampadā.

Accomplishment in virtue,

Accomplishment in generosity,

Katamā ca, gahapati, saddhāsampadā?

Accomplishment in wisdom.

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ: ‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi, satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti. Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, saddhāsampadā. Katamā ca, gahapati, sīlasampadā? Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti …pe…

And what is the accomplishment in faith? Here a noble disciple has faith, he believes in the enlightenment of the Tathagata: Indeed, the Blessed One is an arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowing and conduct, fortunate, knower of the world, unsurpassed leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, enlightened, blessed.

surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti.

This is called accomplishment in faith.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, sīlasampadā. Katamā ca, gahapati, cāgasampadā?

And what is the accomplishment in virtue?

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāṇi vosaggarato yācayogo dānasaṁvibhāgarato.

Here a noble disciple abstains from taking life... abstains from intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to heedlessness.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, cāgasampadā.

This is called accomplishment in virtue.

Katamā ca, gahapati, paññāsampadā?

And what is the accomplishment in generosity?

Abhijjhāvisamalobhābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti. Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati. Byāpādābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti.

Here a noble disciple, dwelling at home, heart freed from the stain of miserliness, freely generous, open-handed, delighting in relinquishment, devoted to charity, delighting in giving and sharing.

Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

This is called accomplishment in generosity.

Thinamiddhābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti kiccaṁ aparādheti. Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati. Uddhaccakukkuccābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti.

And what is the accomplishment in wisdom? A noble disciple, knowing as it really is, abandons the mental defilements of greed and greed, ill will, sloth and torpor, restlessness and remorse, and doubt.

Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

This is called accomplishment in wisdom.

Vicikicchābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti. Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

Householder, for the attainment of these four desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain qualities in the world, these four qualities lead.

Sa kho so, gahapati, ariyasāvako abhijjhāvisamalobho cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā abhijjhāvisamalobhaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati. Byāpādo cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā byāpādaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati.

Here the disciple of the noble ones, with wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, performs four functions.

Thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati. Uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati.

What four?

Householder, for the attainment of these four desirable, agreeable, and pleasing but hard to obtain qualities in the world, these four qualities lead.

Vicikicchā cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā vicikicchaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati. Yato ca kho, gahapati, ariyasāvakassa abhijjhāvisamalobho cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā abhijjhāvisamalobho cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti. Byāpādo cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā byāpādo cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

Here the disciple of the noble ones, with wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, makes himself happy and satisfied, properly enjoys his wealth.

Thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

He makes his parents happy and satisfied, properly enjoys his wealth.

Uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

He makes his children, wife, slaves, workers, and servants happy and satisfied, properly enjoys his wealth.

Vicikicchā cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

He makes his friends and associates happy and satisfied, properly enjoys his wealth.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, ariyasāvako mahāpañño puthupañño āpātadaso paññāsampanno.

This is his first station of consumption, enjoyed in this very way.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, paññāsampadā. Imesaṁ kho, gahapati, catunnaṁ dhammānaṁ iṭṭhānaṁ kantānaṁ manāpānaṁ dullabhānaṁ lokasmiṁ ime cattāro dhammā paṭilābhāya saṁvattanti. Sa kho so, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi cattāri pattakammāni kattā hoti. Katamāni cattāri?

Again the disciple of the noble ones, with wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, protects himself from dangers such as fire, water, kings, thieves, and displeasing heirs, and keeps himself safe.

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi attānaṁ sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati. Mātāpitaro sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati. Puttadāradāsakammakaraporise sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati. Mittāmacce sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati.

This is his second station of consumption, enjoyed in this very way.

Again the disciple of the noble ones, with wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, performs the fivefold offering: to relatives, guests, ancestors, kings, and deities.

Idamassa paṭhamaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ.

This is his third station of consumption, enjoyed in this very way.

Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi yā tā honti āpadā aggito vā udakato vā rājato vā corato vā appiyato vā dāyādato, tathārūpāsu āpadāsu pariyodhāya saṁvattati. Sotthiṁ attānaṁ karoti. Idamassa dutiyaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ. Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi pañcabaliṁ kattā hoti— ñātibaliṁ, atithibaliṁ, pubbapetabaliṁ, rājabaliṁ, devatābaliṁ.

Again the disciple of the noble ones, with wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, establishes an uplifting offering to ascetics and brahmins, those who abstain from intoxication and heedlessness, who endure patience and gentleness, who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves. He establishes an offering leading to heaven, resulting in happiness, leading to heaven.

Idamassa tatiyaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ.

This is his fourth station of consumption, enjoyed in this very way.

Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi ye te samaṇabrāhmaṇā madappamādā paṭiviratā khantisoracce niviṭṭhā ekamattānaṁ damenti, ekamattānaṁ samenti, ekamattānaṁ parinibbāpenti, tathārūpesu samaṇabrāhmaṇesu uddhaggikaṁ dakkhiṇaṁ patiṭṭhāpeti sovaggikaṁ sukhavipākaṁ saggasaṁvattanikaṁ. Idamassa catutthaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ. Sa kho so, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi imāni cattāri pattakammāni kattā hoti.

Indeed the disciple of the noble ones, with wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, performs these four functions.

Yassa kassaci, gahapati, aññatra imehi catūhi pattakammehi bhogā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ime vuccanti, gahapati, bhogā aṭṭhānagatā apattagatā anāyatanaso paribhuttā.

For anyone apart from these four functions, wealth is exhausted; these are called wealth gone to waste, not enjoyed, not properly utilized.

Yassa kassaci, gahapati, imehi catūhi pattakammehi bhogā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ime vuccanti, gahapati, bhogā ṭhānagatā pattagatā āyatanaso paribhuttāti.

For anyone with these four functions, wealth is not exhausted; these are called wealth well stationed, well enjoyed, properly utilized.

Bhuttā bhogā bhatā bhaccā, Vitiṇṇā āpadāsu me; Uddhaggā dakkhiṇā dinnā, Atho pañcabalī katā; Upaṭṭhitā sīlavanto, Saññatā brahmacārayo. Yadatthaṁ bhogaṁ iccheyya, paṇḍito gharamāvasaṁ; So me attho anuppatto, kataṁ ananutāpiyaṁ.

Wealth enjoyed, dependents supported, adversity overcome, and the fivefold offering made; virtuous, restrained in righteous living: such a wise man's purpose in household life is achieved, without regret.

Etaṁ anussaraṁ macco, ariyadhamme ṭhito naro; Idheva naṁ pasaṁsanti, pecca sagge pamodatī”ti. Paṭhamaṁ.

Remembering this, a mortal, a man standing in the noble Dhamma, is praised in this life and rejoices in heaven hereafter.
