Indeed, the self is difficult to tame. The self is indeed one's own protector. Who else could be the protector? With a well-tamed self, one finds a protector hard to find.

Mahākālaupāsakavatthu Attanā hi kataṁ pāpaṁ, Attajaṁ attasambhavaṁ; Abhimatthati dummedhaṁ, Vajiraṁvasmamayaṁ maṇiṁ.

The corrupt done by oneself, born of oneself, arising from oneself, crushes the foolish one, as a diamond crushes a rock.

Devadattavatthu Yassa accantadussilyaṁ, māluvā sālamivotthataṁ; Karoti so tathattānaṁ, yathā naṁ icchatī diso.

For one whose conduct is exceedingly corrupt, like a creeper covering a tree, such a person brings about their own downfall, as an enemy wishes.

Saṅghabhedaparisakkanavatthu Sukarāni asādhūni, attano ahitāni ca; Yaṁ ve hitañca sādhuñca, taṁ ve paramadukkaraṁ.

Corrupt deeds, harmful to oneself, are easy to do. But what is beneficial and good is indeed very difficult to do.

Kālattheravatthu Yo sāsanaṁ arahataṁ, ariyānaṁ dhammajīvinaṁ; Paṭikkosati dummedho, diṭṭhiṁ nissāya pāpikaṁ; Phalāni kaṭṭhakasseva, attaghātāya phallati.

The foolish one who rejects the teaching of the worthy ones, the noble ones who live by the Dhamma, relying on a wrong view, bears fruit like the bamboo, for self-destruction.

Cūḷakālaupāsakavatthu Attanā hi kataṁ pāpaṁ, attanā saṅkilissati; Attanā akataṁ pāpaṁ, attanāva visujjhati; Suddhī asuddhi paccattaṁ, nāñño aññaṁ visodhaye.

By oneself is corrupt done, by oneself is one defiled. By oneself is corrupt not done, by oneself is one purified. Purity and impurity depend on oneself; no one can purify another.

Attadatthattheravatthu Attadatthaṁ paratthena, bahunāpi na hāpaye; Attadatthamabhiññāya, sadatthapasuto siyā. Attavaggo dvādasamo.

One should not neglect one's own welfare for the sake of another's, however great. Knowing one's own welfare, one should be intent on one's true goal.
