Discourse on the Factors of Enlightenment

Bojjhaṅgakathā Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthi.

“Sattime, bhikkhave, bojjhaṅgā.

Disciples, there are these seven factors of enlightenment.

Katame satta?

What are the seven?

Satisambojjhaṅgo, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo, vīriyasambojjhaṅgo, pītisambojjhaṅgo, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo, samādhisambojjhaṅgo, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo— ime kho, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaṅgā”.

The mindfulness factor of enlightenment, the investigation of states factor of enlightenment, the energy factor of enlightenment, the joy factor of enlightenment, the tranquility factor of enlightenment, the concentration factor of enlightenment, the equanimity factor of enlightenment: these are the seven factors of enlightenment.

Bojjhaṅgāti kenaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā?

Because they lead to enlightenment: they are called factors of enlightenment.

Bodhāya saṁvattantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

Because they awaken: they are called factors of enlightenment.

Bujjhantīti— bojjhaṅgā.

Because they reawaken: they are called factors of enlightenment.

Anubujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

Because they fully awaken: they are called factors of enlightenment.

Paṭibujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

Because they completely awaken: they are called factors of enlightenment.

Sambujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā. Bujjhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anubujjhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, paṭibujjhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, sambujjhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā. Bodhentīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of reawakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fully awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of completely awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment.

Anubodhentīti—bojjhaṅgā. Paṭibodhentīti—bojjhaṅgā.

Because they cause enlightenment: they are called factors of enlightenment.

Sambodhentīti—bojjhaṅgā. Bodhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anubodhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, paṭibodhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, sambodhanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā.

Because they cause reawakening: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they cause full awakening: they are called factors of enlightenment. Because they cause complete awakening: they are called factors of enlightenment.

Bodhipakkhiyaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anubodhipakkhiyaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, paṭibodhipakkhiyaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, sambodhipakkhiyaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā. In the sense of causing enlightenment, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of causing reawakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of causing full awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of causing complete awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment.

In the sense of being requisites for enlightenment, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of being requisites for reawakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of being requisites for full awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of being requisites for complete awakening, they are called factors of enlightenment.

In the sense of obtaining wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of re-obtaining wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of planting wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of firmly planting wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of bringing wisdom to maturity, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fully maturing wisdom, they are called factors of enlightenment.

The Tenfold Root and Other Sets

In the sense of being the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the conduct of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of grasping the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the retinue of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fulfilling the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of maturing the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the analytical knowing of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of bringing the analytical knowing of the root to maturity, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of mastery in the analytical knowing of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery in the analytical knowing of the root, they are called factors of enlightenment.

In the sense of being the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the conduct of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of grasping the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the retinue of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fulfilling the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of maturing the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the analytical knowing of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of bringing the analytical knowing of the cause to maturity, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of mastery in the analytical knowing of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery in the analytical knowing of the cause, they are called factors of enlightenment.

In the sense of being the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the conduct of the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of grasping the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of having the retinue of the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of fulfilling the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of maturing the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the analytical knowing of the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of bringing the analytical knowing of the condition to maturity, they are called factors of enlightenment; in the sense of mastery in the analytical knowing of the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery in the analytical knowing of the condition, they are called factors of enlightenment.

Anavajjaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjacariyaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjapariggahaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjaparivāraṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjaparipūraṇaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjaparipākaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjapaṭisambhidaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjapaṭisambhidāpāpanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjapaṭisambhidāya vasībhāvaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, anavajjapaṭisambhidāya vasībhāvappattānampi bojjhaṅgā.

By the attribute of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment.

By the attribute of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Nekkhammaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammacariyaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammapariggahaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammaparivāraṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammaparipūraṇaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammaparipākaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammapaṭisambhidaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammapaṭisambhidāpāpanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammapaṭisambhidāya vasībhāvaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, nekkhammapaṭisambhidāya vasībhāvappattānampi bojjhaṅgā. By the attribute of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment.

By the attribute of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment.

By the attribute of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of being free from defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Vosaggaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggacariyaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggapariggahaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggaparivāraṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggaparipūraṇaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggaparipākaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggapaṭisambhidaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggapaṭisambhidāpāpanaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggapaṭisambhidāya vasībhāvaṭṭhena bojjhaṅgā, vosaggapaṭisambhidāya vasībhāvappattānampi bojjhaṅgā. By the attribute of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the conduct of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the acquisition of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the accompaniment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the fulfillment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the maturation of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the attainment of discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; by the mastery of discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery of discernment of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment.

In the sense of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the practice of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the acquisition of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the accompaniment of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the fulfillment of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the maturation of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of the attainment of the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; in the sense of mastery in the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment; even for those who have attained mastery in the discrimination of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Visuddhaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of the root, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Anavajjaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of the cause, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Nekkhammaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of the condition, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Vimuttaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of purity, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Anāsavaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of blamelessness, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Vivekaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of renunciation, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Vosaggaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of liberation, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Mūlacariyaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of being without defilements, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Hetucariyaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of seclusion, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Paccayacariyaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of relinquishment, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Visuddhicariyaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

In the sense of the practice of the root, they are the factors of enlightenment.

In the sense of the practice of the cause, they are the factors of enlightenment.

Ārammaṇaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

They know the state of the object: bojjhaṅgā.

Gocaraṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

They know the state of the range: bojjhaṅgā.

Pahānaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

They know the state of abandonment: bojjhaṅgā.

Pariccāgaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

They know the state of renunciation: bojjhaṅgā.

Vuṭṭhānaṭṭhaṁ bujjhantīti—bojjhaṅgā.

They know the state of emergence: bojjhaṅgā.

Defilements are bound by measure, all are obsessions, and all formations leading to rebirth are immeasurable cessation by the nature of being unshakable and unconditioned.
