The Discourse on Dispassion

Virāgakathā Virāgo maggo, vimutti phalaṁ.

Dispassion is the path, liberation is the fruit.

Kathaṁ virāgo maggo? Sotāpattimaggakkhaṇe dassanaṭṭhena sammādiṭṭhi micchādiṭṭhiyā virajjati, tadanuvattakakilesehi ca khandhehi ca virajjati, bahiddhā ca sabbanimittehi virajjati. Virāgo virāgārammaṇo virāgagocaro virāge samudāgato virāge ṭhito virāge patiṭṭhito. Virāgoti dve virāgā— nibbānañca virāgo, ye ca nibbānārammaṇatājātā dhammā sabbe virāgā hontīti—virāgā. Sahajātāni sattaṅgāni virāgaṁ gacchantīti—virāgo maggo. Etena maggena buddhā ca sāvakā ca agataṁ disaṁ nibbānaṁ gacchantīti— aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo.

How is dispassion the path?

At the moment of the path of stream-entry, right view, in terms of seeing, becomes dispassionate towards wrong view, and becomes dispassionate towards the defilements and aggregates that follow it, and becomes dispassionate towards all external signs.

Yāvatā puthusamaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ parappavādānaṁ maggā, ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo aggo ca seṭṭho ca pāmokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro cāti— maggānaṁ aṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho. Paggahaṭṭhena sammāvāyāmo micchāvāyāmā virajjati.

Nibbāna is dispassion, and all phenomena born of the object of Nibbāna are dispassionate: thus, dispassion.

Bahiddhā ca sabbanimittehi virajjati. Virāgo virāgārammaṇo virāgagocaro virāge samudāgato virāge ṭhito virāge patiṭṭhito.

The seven factors that arise together go towards dispassion: thus, dispassion is the path.

Virāgoti dve virāgā— nibbānañca virāgo, ye ca nibbānārammaṇatājātā dhammā sabbe virāgā hontīti—virāgā.

By this path, both the Tathāgatas and their disciples go to the destination that is Nibbāna:

Sahajātāni sattaṅgāni virāgaṁ gacchantīti—virāgo maggo.

the Noble Eightfold Path.

Etena maggena buddhā ca sāvakā ca agataṁ disaṁ nibbānaṁ gacchantīti— aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo. Yāvatā puthusamaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ parappavādānaṁ maggā, ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo aggo ca seṭṭho ca pāmokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro cāti— maggānaṁ aṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho.
