Mātikākathā Nicchāto, mokkho vimokkho, vijjāvimutti, adhisīlaṁ, adhicittaṁ, adhipaññā, passaddhi, ñāṇaṁ, dassanaṁ, visuddhi, nekkhammaṁ, nissaraṇaṁ, paviveko, vosaggo, cariyā, jhānavimokkho, bhāvanā, adhiṭṭhānaṁ, jīvitaṁ.

Mātikākathā: Fulfillment, liberation, freedom, knowing and release, higher virtue, higher mind, higher wisdom, tranquility, knowing, vision, purification, renunciation, release, solitude, letting go, conduct, jhāna and liberation, cultivation, determination, and life.

Vijjāvimutti: Knowing is renunciation; freedom is release from sense satisfaction.

Vijjanto muccati, muccanto vijjatīti— vijjāvimutti.

Knowing, one is released; being released, one knows: this is vijjāvimutti.

Abyāpādo vijjatīti vijjā, byāpādato vimuccatīti vimutti.

Goodwill is knowing; release from ill-will is freedom.

Adhisīlaṁ adhicittaṁ adhipaññāti nekkhammena kāmacchandaṁ, saṁvaraṭṭhena sīlavisuddhi, avikkhepaṭṭhena cittavisuddhi, dassanaṭṭhena diṭṭhivisuddhi.

Adhisīlaṁ, adhicittaṁ, adhipaññā: Renunciation of sense satisfaction; through restraint, there is purification of virtue. Through concentration, there is purification of mind.

Yo tattha saṁvaraṭṭho, ayaṁ adhisīlasikkhā.

Through seeing, there is purification of view.

Yo tattha avikkhepaṭṭho, ayaṁ adhicittasikkhā.

That which pertains to restraint is higher virtue (adhisīla).

Yo tattha dassanaṭṭho, ayaṁ adhipaññāsikkhā.

That which pertains to concentration is higher mind (adhicitta).

Abyāpādena byāpādaṁ saṁvaraṭṭhena sīlavisuddhi …pe…

That which pertains to seeing is higher wisdom (adhipaññā).

Through goodwill, ill-will is restrained and virtue purified; … through the path of arahantship, all defilements are restrained,

Yo tattha saṁvaraṭṭho, ayaṁ adhisīlasikkhā.

virtue is purified, the mind is purified, and view is purified.

Yo tattha avikkhepaṭṭho, ayaṁ adhicittasikkhā.

By overcoming desire for sensual pleasures, one sees the purity of mind.

By overcoming ill will, one sees non-ill will.

sabbakilese pajahanto arahattamaggena visujjhati.

By overcoming all defilements, one sees the path to

arahantship.

Nekkhammanti kāmānametaṁ nissaraṇaṁ, yadidaṁ nekkhammaṁ.

Purity is the abandonment of desire for sensual pleasures, which is called non-attachment.

Rūpānametaṁ nissaraṇaṁ, yadidaṁ āruppaṁ.

It is the abandonment of form, which is called formlessness.

Yaṁ kho pana kiñci bhūtaṁ saṅkhataṁ paṭiccasamuppannaṁ, nirodho tassa nekkhammaṁ.

Whatever is conditioned, arising from dependent origination, its cessation is non-attachment.

Byāpādassa abyāpādo nekkhammaṁ.

The non-ill will of ill will is non-attachment.

Thinamiddhassa ālokasaññā nekkhammaṁ …pe…

The perception of light in sloth and torpor is non-attachment.

sabbakilesānaṁ arahattamaggo nekkhammaṁ.

The path to arahantship of all defilements is non-attachment.

Nissaraṇanti kāmānametaṁ nissaraṇaṁ, yadidaṁ nekkhammaṁ.

Release is the abandonment of desire for sensual pleasures, which is called non-attachment.

Rūpānametaṁ nissaraṇaṁ, yadidaṁ āruppaṁ.

It is the abandonment of form, which is called formlessness.

The relinquishment is the abandonment of desire for sensual pleasures, which is called relinquishment.

The abandonment of ill will by non-ill will is relinquishment.

arahattamaggena sabbakilese vosajjatīti— vosaggo.

The path to arahantship of all defilements is relinquishment.

Cariyāti kāmacchandaṁ pajahanto nekkhammena carati.

Conduct is the abandonment of desire for sensual pleasures, which is called conduct.

By abandoning ill will, one conducts oneself with non-ill will.

sabbakilese pajahanto arahattamaggena carati.

By abandoning all defilements, one conducts oneself on the path to arahantship.

Jhānavimokkhoti nekkhammaṁ jhāyatīti— jhānaṁ.

The liberation of jhāna is the non-attachment of jhāna.

Kāmacchandaṁ jhāpetīti— jhānaṁ.

The abandonment of desire for sensual pleasures is jhāna.

Jhāyanto muccatīti— jhānavimokkho.

By meditating, one is liberated.

Jhāpento muccatīti— jhānavimokkho.

By entering into jhāna, one is liberated.

Jhāyantīti dhammā.

The one who contemplates knows the dhammas.

Jhāpentīti kilese.

The one who contemplates knows the defilements.

Jhāte ca jhāpe ca jānātīti— jhānajhāyī.

The one who knows and sees both is a jhāna meditator.

Bhāvanā adhiṭṭhānaṁ jīvitanti kāmacchandaṁ pajahanto nekkhammaṁ bhāvetīti— bhāvanāsampanno.

The determination of development is the abandonment of desire for sensual pleasures, which is called development.

Nekkhammavasena cittaṁ adhiṭṭhātīti— adhiṭṭhānasampanno.

By the non-attachment of non-attachment, the mind is determined.

Svāyaṁ evaṁ bhāvanāsampanno adhiṭṭhānasampanno samaṁ jīvati, no visamaṁ; sammā jīvati, no micchā; visuddhaṁ jīvati, no kiliṭṭhanti— ājīvasampanno.

Thus, one who is endowed with developmentand determination lives equally, not unequally.

He lives rightly, not wrongly; he lives pure, not impure: endowed with livelihood.

Svāyaṁ evaṁ bhāvanāsampanno adhiṭṭhānasampanno ājīvasampanno yaññadeva parisaṁ upasaṅkamati— yadi khattiyaparisaṁ yadi brāhmaṇaparisaṁ yadi gahapatiparisaṁ yadi samaṇaparisaṁ— visārado upasaṅkamati amaṅkubhūto.

He himself, thus endowed with development, endowed with determination, endowed with livelihood, approaches the assembly of offerings: whether it be the assembly of nobles, or the assembly of brahmins, or the assembly of

householders, or the assembly of ascetics: he approaches with wisdom, unshaken.

Tathā hi so bhāvanāsampanno adhiṭṭhānasampanno ājīvasampanno.

For he is thus endowed with development, endowed with determination, endowed with livelihood.

With respect to the path to arahantship, he establishes his mind: thus he is endowed with determination.

Svāyaṁ evaṁ bhāvanāsampanno adhiṭṭhānasampanno samaṁ jīvati, no visamaṁ; sammā jīvati, no micchā; visuddhaṁ jīvati, no kiliṭṭhanti— ājīvasampanno.

Paññāvaggo tatiyo.

The third section is the section on wisdom.

Tassuddānaṁ Paññā iddhi abhisamayo, viveko cariyapañcamo; Pāṭihāri samasīsi, satipaṭṭhānā vipassanā; Tatiye paññāvaggamhi, mātikāya ca te dasāti.

Its summary is: Wisdom, mastery, realization, seclusion, the fifth practice; miraculous powers, equal vision, mindfulness, insight; in the third section on wisdom, and in the matrix, there are ten.

Mahāvaggo yuganaddho, paññāvaggo ca nāmato; Tayova vaggā imamhi, paṭisambhidāpakaraṇe.

The great section is connected, and the section on wisdom is named; these three sections are in this, in the treatise on discernment.

Anantanayamaggesu, gambhīro sāgarūpamo; Nabhañca tārakākiṇṇaṁ, thūlo jātassaro yathā; Kathikānaṁ visālāya, yogīnaṁ ñāṇajotananti.

In the endless paths, deep like the ocean; the sky is filled with stars, like the sound of a great bell; the vastness of the speakers, the light of the knowing of yogis.

Paṭisambhidāmaggapāḷi niṭṭhitā.

The discourse on the paths of discernment is complete.
