Saṁyutta Nikāya 1.1 1.

Oghataraṇasutta

Naḷavagga Oghataraṇasutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

Then a certain deity, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One; having approached, the deity paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “kathaṁ nu tvaṁ, mārisa, oghamatarī”ti?

Standing to one side, the deity said to the Blessed One:

How, dear sir, did you cross over the flood?

“Appatiṭṭhaṁ khvāhaṁ, āvuso, anāyūhaṁ oghamatarin”ti.

Without standing and without struggling, friend, I crossed over the flood.

“Yathākathaṁ pana tvaṁ, mārisa, appatiṭṭhaṁ anāyūhaṁ oghamatarī”ti?

But how, dear sir, without standing and without struggling, did you cross over the flood?

“Yadāsvāhaṁ, āvuso, santiṭṭhāmi tadāssu saṁsīdāmi; yadāsvāhaṁ, āvuso, āyūhāmi tadāssu nibbuyhāmi.

When I stood, I sank; when I struggled, I got swept away.

Evaṁ khvāhaṁ, āvuso, appatiṭṭhaṁ anāyūhaṁ oghamatarin”ti.

Thus, without standing and without struggling, I crossed over the flood.

“Cirassaṁ vata passāmi, brāhmaṇaṁ parinibbutaṁ; Appatiṭṭhaṁ anāyūhaṁ, tiṇṇaṁ loke visattikan”ti.

For a long time, indeed, I see A brahmin fully extinguished; Without standing and without struggling, Having crossed over attachment in the world.

Idamavoca sā devatā.

This is what the deity said.

Samanuñño satthā ahosi.

The Teacher approved.

Atha kho sā devatā: “samanuñño me satthā”ti bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyīti.

Then the deity, thinking, The Teacher has approved of me, paid homage to the Blessed One, and keeping him on the right, vanished right there.
