Saṁyutta Nikāya 22.101 10.

Vāsijaṭa Sutta

Pupphavagga Vāsijaṭasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthī.

“Jānato ahaṁ, bhikkhave, passato āsavānaṁ khayaṁ vadāmi, no ajānato no apassato.

Disciples, I declare the destruction of the taints for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know and does not see.

Kiñca, bhikkhave, jānato kiṁ passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti?

And what does one know and see for the destruction of the taints to occur?

‘Iti rūpaṁ, iti rūpassa samudayo, iti rūpassa atthaṅgamo; iti vedanā …

This is form, this is the arising of form, this is the cessation of form;

this is feeling...

iti saññā …

this is perception...

iti saṅkhārā …

these are formations...

iti viññāṇaṁ, iti viññāṇassa samudayo, iti viññāṇassa atthaṅgamo’ti— evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, jānato evaṁ passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti.

this is consciousness, this is the arising of consciousness, this is the cessation of consciousness: Thus for one who knows and sees in this way, the destruction of the taints occurs.

Bhāvanānuyogaṁ ananuyuttassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viharato kiñcāpi evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ‘aho vata me anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimucceyyā’ti, atha khvassa neva anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuccati.

For a disciple who does not engage in the practice of development, even if such a wish arises: Oh, that my mind might be freed from the taints without clinging, it will not be freed from the taints without clinging.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

What is the reason for this?

‘Abhāvitattā’ tissa vacanīyaṁ.

Because of undeveloped faculties, it should be said.

Kissa abhāvitattā?

What faculties are undeveloped?

Abhāvitattā catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ, abhāvitattā catunnaṁ sammappadhānānaṁ, abhāvitattā catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ, abhāvitattā pañcannaṁ indriyānaṁ, abhāvitattā pañcannaṁ balānaṁ, abhāvitattā sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ, abhāvitattā ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, kukkuṭiyā aṇḍāni aṭṭha vā dasa vā dvādasa vā.

The four dwellings of mindfulness are undeveloped, the four right efforts are undeveloped, the four bases of spiritual power are undeveloped, the five faculties are undeveloped, the five powers are undeveloped, the seven factors of enlightenment are undeveloped, the Noble Eightfold Path is undeveloped.

Tānassu kukkuṭiyā na sammā adhisayitāni, na sammā pariseditāni, na sammā paribhāvitāni. Kiñcāpi tassā kukkuṭiyā evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ‘aho vata me kukkuṭapotakā pādanakhasikhāya vā mukhatuṇḍakena vā aṇḍakosaṁ padāletvā sotthinā abhinibbhijjeyyun’ti, atha kho abhabbāva te kukkuṭapotakā pādanakhasikhāya vā mukhatuṇḍakena vā aṇḍakosaṁ padāletvā sotthinā abhinibbhijjituṁ.

Just as if a hen had eight, ten, or twelve eggs, but they were not properly sat on, not properly incubated, not properly developed, even if such a wish arose in her:

Oh, that my chicks might break the eggshell with their claws or beaks and hatch safely, they would not be able to break the eggshell with their claws or beaks and hatch safely.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

What is the reason for this?

Tathā hi pana, bhikkhave, kukkuṭiyā aṇḍāni aṭṭha vā dasa vā dvādasa vā; tāni kukkuṭiyā na sammā adhisayitāni, na sammā pariseditāni, na sammā paribhāvitāni.

Because the hen's eggs were not properly sat on, not properly incubated, not properly developed.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhāvanānuyogaṁ ananuyuttassa bhikkhuno viharato kiñcāpi evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ‘aho vata me anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimucceyyā’ti, atha khvassa neva anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuccati.

In the same way for a disciple who does not engage in the practice of development, even if such a wish arises: Oh, that my mind might be freed from the taints without clinging, it will not be freed from the taints without clinging.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

What is the reason for this?

‘Abhāvitattā’tissa vacanīyaṁ.

Because of undeveloped faculties, it should be said.

Kissa abhāvitattā?

What faculties are undeveloped?

Abhāvitattā catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ …pe…

The four dwellings of mindfulness are undeveloped...

aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa.

the Noble Eightfold Path is undeveloped.

Bhāvanānuyogaṁ anuyuttassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viharato kiñcāpi na evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ‘aho vata me anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimucceyyā’ti, atha khvassa anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuccati.

For a disciple who engages in the practice of development, even if such a wish does not arise: Oh, that my mind might be freed from the taints without clinging, it will be freed from the taints without clinging.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

What is the reason for this?

‘Bhāvitattā’tissa vacanīyaṁ.

Because of developed faculties, it should be said.

Kissa bhāvitattā?

What faculties are developed?

Bhāvitattā catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ, bhāvitattā catunnaṁ sammappadhānānaṁ, bhāvitattā catunnaṁ iddhipādānaṁ, bhāvitattā pañcannaṁ indriyānaṁ, bhāvitattā pañcannaṁ balānaṁ, bhāvitattā sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ, bhāvitattā ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, kukkuṭiyā aṇḍāni aṭṭha vā dasa vā dvādasa vā.

The four dwellings of mindfulness are developed, the four right efforts are developed, the four bases of spiritual power are developed, the five faculties are developed, the five powers are developed, the seven factors of enlightenment are developed, the Noble Eightfold Path is developed.

Tānassu kukkuṭiyā sammā adhisayitāni, sammā pariseditāni, sammā paribhāvitāni. Kiñcāpi tassā kukkuṭiyā na evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ‘aho vata me kukkuṭapotakā pādanakhasikhāya vā mukhatuṇḍakena vā aṇḍakosaṁ padāletvā sotthinā abhinibbhijjeyyun’ti, atha kho bhabbāva te kukkuṭapotakā pādanakhasikhāya vā mukhatuṇḍakena vā aṇḍakosaṁ padāletvā sotthinā abhinibbhijjituṁ.

Just as if a hen had eight, ten, or twelve eggs, and they were properly sat on, properly incubated, properly developed, even if such a wish did not arise in her: Oh, that my chicks might break the eggshell with their claws or beaks and hatch safely, they would be able to break the eggshell with their claws or beaks and hatch safely.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

What is the reason for this?

Tathā hi pana, bhikkhave, kukkuṭiyā aṇḍāni aṭṭha vā dasa vā dvādasa vā; tānassu kukkuṭiyā sammā adhisayitāni, sammā pariseditāni, sammā paribhāvitāni.

Because the hen's eggs were properly sat on, properly incubated, properly developed.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhāvanānuyogaṁ anuyuttassa bhikkhuno viharato kiñcāpi na evaṁ icchā uppajjeyya: ‘aho vata me anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimucceyyā’ti, atha khvassa anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuccati.

In the same way for a disciple who engages in the practice of development, even if such a wish does not arise: Oh, that my mind might be freed from the taints without clinging, it will be freed from the taints without clinging.

Taṁ kissa hetu?

What is the reason for this?

‘Bhāvitattā’tissa vacanīyaṁ.

Because of developed faculties, it should be said.

Kissa bhāvitattā?

What faculties are developed?

Bhāvitattā catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ …pe…

The four dwellings of mindfulness are developed...

bhāvitattā ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa.

the Noble Eightfold Path is developed.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, palagaṇḍassa vā palagaṇḍantevāsissa vā vāsijaṭe dissanteva aṅgulipadāni dissati aṅguṭṭhapadaṁ.

Just as in a heap of cloth or a cloth student's heap, the marks of the fingers and thumbs are visible.

No ca khvassa evaṁ ñāṇaṁ hoti: ‘ettakaṁ vata me ajja vāsijaṭassa khīṇaṁ, ettakaṁ hiyyo, ettakaṁ pare’ti.

But he does not have such knowing: This much of my cloth heap was used today, this much yesterday, this much the day before.

Atha khvassa khīṇe khīṇantveva ñāṇaṁ hoti.

But he knows when it is used up.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhāvanānuyogaṁ anuyuttassa bhikkhuno viharato kiñcāpi na evaṁ ñāṇaṁ hoti: ‘ettakaṁ vata me ajja āsavānaṁ khīṇaṁ, ettakaṁ hiyyo, ettakaṁ pare’ti, atha khvassa khīṇe khīṇantveva ñāṇaṁ hoti.

In the same way for a disciple who engages in the practice of development, even if he does not have such knowing: This much of my taints was destroyed today, this much yesterday, this much the day before, he knows when they are destroyed.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, sāmuddikāya nāvāya vettabandhanabaddhāya vassamāsāni udake pariyādāya hemantikena thalaṁ ukkhittāya vātātapaparetāni vettabandhanāni. Tāni pāvusakena meghena abhippavuṭṭhāni appakasireneva paṭippassambhanti pūtikāni bhavanti; evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhāvanānuyogaṁ anuyuttassa bhikkhuno viharato appakasireneva saṁyojanāni paṭippassambhanti pūtikāni bhavantī”ti. Navamaṁ.

Just as a ship bound with bamboo strips, after being in the water for a year or more... Just as in autumn, when the sky is clear, the wind and sun dry up the bindings of reeds, and when they are drenched by the rain of the rainy season, they easily become rotten; in the same way for a disciple who is devoted to the practice of jhana, the fetters easily become weakened and rotten.
