Khajjanīyasutta

Khajjanīyavagga Khajjanīyasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthi.

“Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussaramānā anussaranti sabbete pañcupādānakkhandhe anussaranti etesaṁ vā aññataraṁ.

Disciples, whoever among the ascetics or brahmins recollects their manifold past lives, they all recollect the five aggregates of clinging or one among them.

Katame pañca?

Which five?

‘Evaṁrūpo ahosiṁ atītamaddhānan’ti— iti vā hi, bhikkhave, anussaramāno rūpaṁyeva anussarati. ‘Evaṁvedano ahosiṁ atītamaddhānan’ti— iti vā hi, bhikkhave, anussaramāno vedanaṁyeva anussarati.

Such was my form in the past: Thus recollecting, they recollect only form. Such was my feeling in the past: Thus recollecting, they recollect only feeling. Such was my perception in the past: Thus recollecting, they recollect only perception.

‘Evaṁsañño ahosiṁ atītamaddhānan’ti … ‘evaṁsaṅkhāro ahosiṁ atītamaddhānan’ti …

Such were my formations in the past: Thus recollecting, they recollect only formations.

‘evaṁviññāṇo ahosiṁ atītamaddhānan’ti— iti vā hi, bhikkhave, anussaramāno viññāṇameva anussarati.

Such was my consciousness in the past: Thus recollecting, they recollect only consciousness.

Tatra, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako iti paṭisañcikkhati: ‘ahaṁ kho etarahi rūpena khajjāmi.

There a learned noble disciple reflects thus: I am now being consumed by form.

Atītampāhaṁ addhānaṁ evameva rūpena khajjiṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena rūpena khajjāmi.

In the past, I was also consumed by form in the same way as I am now being consumed by present form.

Ahañceva kho pana anāgataṁ rūpaṁ abhinandeyyaṁ, anāgatampāhaṁ addhānaṁ evameva rūpena khajjeyyaṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena rūpena khajjāmī’ti.

If I were to delight in future form, I would be consumed by form in the future in the same way as I am now being consumed by present form.

So iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītasmiṁ rūpasmiṁ anapekkho hoti; anāgataṁ rūpaṁ nābhinandati; paccuppannassa rūpassa nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti.

Thus, reflecting in this way, he becomes indifferent to past form; he does not delight in future form; he is practicing for the disillusionment, dispassion, and cessation of present form.

‘Ahaṁ kho etarahi vedanāya khajjāmi.

I am now being consumed by feeling.

Atītampāhaṁ addhānaṁ evameva vedanāya khajjiṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannāya vedanāya khajjāmi.

In the past, I was also consumed by feeling in the same way as I am now being consumed by present feeling.

Ahañceva kho pana anāgataṁ vedanaṁ abhinandeyyaṁ; anāgatampāhaṁ addhānaṁ evameva vedanāya khajjeyyaṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannāya vedanāya khajjāmī’ti.

If I were to delight in future feeling, I would be consumed by feeling in the future in the same way as I am now being consumed by present feeling.

So iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītāya vedanāya anapekkho hoti; anāgataṁ vedanaṁ nābhinandati; paccuppannāya vedanāya nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti.

Thus, reflecting in this way, he becomes indifferent to past feeling; he does not delight in future feeling; he is practicing for the disillusionment, dispassion, and cessation of present feeling.

‘Ahaṁ kho etarahi saññāya khajjāmi …pe…

I am now being consumed by perception...

ahaṁ kho etarahi saṅkhārehi khajjāmi.

I am now being consumed by formations.

Atītampāhaṁ addhānaṁ evameva saṅkhārehi khajjiṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannehi saṅkhārehi khajjāmīti.

In the past, I was also consumed by formations in the same way as I am now being consumed by present formations.

Ahañceva kho pana anāgate saṅkhāre abhinandeyyaṁ; anāgatampāhaṁ addhānaṁ evameva saṅkhārehi khajjeyyaṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannehi saṅkhārehi khajjāmī’ti.

If I were to delight in future formations, I would be consumed by formations in the future in the same way as I am now being consumed by present formations.

So iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītesu saṅkhāresu anapekkho hoti; anāgate saṅkhāre nābhinandati; paccuppannānaṁ saṅkhārānaṁ nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti.

Thus, reflecting in this way, he becomes indifferent to past formations; he does not delight in future formations; he is practicing for the disillusionment, dispassion, and cessation of present formations.

‘Ahaṁ kho etarahi viññāṇena khajjāmi.

I am now being consumed by consciousness.

Atītampi addhānaṁ evameva viññāṇena khajjiṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena viññāṇena khajjāmi.

In the past, I was also consumed by consciousness in the same way as I am now being consumed by present consciousness.

Ahañceva kho pana anāgataṁ viññāṇaṁ abhinandeyyaṁ; anāgatampāhaṁ addhānaṁ evameva viññāṇena khajjeyyaṁ, seyyathāpi etarahi paccuppannena viññāṇena khajjāmī’ti.

If I were to delight in future consciousness, I would be consumed by consciousness in the future in the same way as I am now being consumed by present consciousness.

So iti paṭisaṅkhāya atītasmiṁ viññāṇasmiṁ anapekkho hoti; anāgataṁ viññāṇaṁ nābhinandati; paccuppannassa viññāṇassa nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti.

So, reflecting thus, he becomes indifferent to past consciousness; he does not delight in future consciousness; he is practicing for the disenchantment, dispassion, and cessation of present consciousness.

Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave, rūpaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā”ti?

What do you think is form permanent or impermanent?

“Aniccaṁ, bhante”.

Impermanent, venerable sir.

“Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vā”ti?

Now, is what is impermanent suffering or happiness?

“Dukkhaṁ, bhante”.

Suffering, venerable sir.

“Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ‘etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attā’”ti?

Now, is it fitting to regard what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change as This is mine, this I am, this is my self?

“No hetaṁ, bhante”.

No, venerable sir.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako apacināti, no ācināti; pajahati, na upādiyati; visineti, na ussineti; vidhūpeti, na sandhūpeti.

This is called a noble disciple who dismantles, does not accumulate; who abandons, does not cling; who scatters, does not amass; who extinguishes, does not kindle.

Seeing thus a learned noble disciple becomes disenchanted with form, disenchanted with feeling, disenchanted with perception, disenchanted with formations, disenchanted with consciousness.

Evaṁ passaṁ, bhikkhave, sutavā ariyasāvako rūpasmimpi nibbindati, vedanāyapi …

Being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate; through dispassion, he is liberated.

saññāyapi … saṅkhāresupi … viññāṇasmimpi nibbindati.

When liberated, there is knowing that he is liberated.

Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati. Vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti. ‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti. Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being.

This is called a disciple who neither accumulates nor diminishes, having stood after accumulating; neither abandons nor clings, having stood after abandoning; neither slackens nor strains, having stood after slackening; neither disperses nor gathers, having stood after dispersing. What does he neither accumulate nor diminish, having stood after accumulating?

Thus the gods with Indra, Brahma, and Pajapati, honor a disciple whose mind is thus liberated from afar, saying: Homage to you, noble man, homage to you, supreme man; for we do not know what you rely on, in which you contemplate.
