Nakhasikhāsutta

Pupphavagga Nakhasikhāsutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthi.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “atthi nu kho, bhante, kiñci rūpaṁ yaṁ rūpaṁ niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassati?

While sitting to one side, that disciple said to the Blessed One: Is there, venerable sir, any form that is permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity?

Atthi nu kho, bhante, kāci vedanā yā vedanā niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassati?

Is there, venerable sir, any feeling that is permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity?

Atthi nu kho, bhante, kāci saññā …pe…

Is there, venerable sir, any perception...

keci saṅkhārā, ye saṅkhārā niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassanti?

any formations that are permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as they are for all eternity?

Atthi nu kho, bhante, kiñci viññāṇaṁ, yaṁ viññāṇaṁ niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassatī”ti?

Is there, venerable sir, any consciousness that is permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity?

“Natthi kho, bhikkhu, kiñci rūpaṁ, yaṁ rūpaṁ niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassati.

There is no form that is permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity.

Natthi kho, bhikkhu, kāci vedanā …

There is no feeling...

kāci saññā …

no perception...

keci saṅkhārā …pe…

no formations...

kiñci viññāṇaṁ, yaṁ viññāṇaṁ niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassatī”ti.

no consciousness that is permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity.

Atha kho bhagavā parittaṁ nakhasikhāyaṁ paṁsuṁ āropetvā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca: “ettakampi kho, bhikkhu, rūpaṁ natthi niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassati.

Then the Blessed One, having taken a little bit of dust on his fingernail, said to that disciple: Even this much form is not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity.

Ettakañcepi, bhikkhu, rūpaṁ abhavissa niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ, nayidaṁ brahmacariyavāso paññāyetha sammā dukkhakkhayāya.

If even this much form were permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, then the holy life would not be discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhu, ettakampi rūpaṁ natthi niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ, tasmā brahmacariyavāso paññāyati sammā dukkhakkhayāya”.

But because even this much form is not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, therefore the holy life is discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Ettakāpi kho, bhikkhu, vedanā natthi niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassati.

Even this much feeling is not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity.

Ettakā cepi, bhikkhu, vedanā abhavissa niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā, na yidaṁ brahmacariyavāso paññāyetha sammā dukkhakkhayāya.

If even this much feeling were permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, then the holy life would not be discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhu, ettakāpi vedanā natthi niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā, tasmā brahmacariyavāso paññāyati sammā dukkhakkhayāya.

But because even this much feeling is not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, therefore the holy life is discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Ettakāpi kho, bhikkhu, saññā natthi …pe…

Even this much perception is not...

ettakāpi kho, bhikkhu, saṅkhārā natthi niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassanti.

Even this much formations are not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as they are for all eternity.

Ettakā cepi, bhikkhu, saṅkhārā abhavissaṁsu niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā, na yidaṁ brahmacariyavāso paññāyetha sammā dukkhakkhayāya.

If even this much formations were permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, then the holy life would not be discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhu, ettakāpi saṅkhārā natthi niccā dhuvā sassatā avipariṇāmadhammā, tasmā brahmacariyavāso paññāyati sammā dukkhakkhayāya.

But because even this much formations are not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, therefore the holy life is discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Ettakampi kho, bhikkhu, viññāṇaṁ natthi niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ sassatisamaṁ tatheva ṭhassati.

Even this much consciousness is not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain just as it is for all eternity.

Ettakampi kho, bhikkhu, viññāṇaṁ abhavissa niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ, na yidaṁ brahmacariyavāso paññāyetha sammā dukkhakkhayāya.

If even this much consciousness were permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, then the holy life would not be discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhu, ettakampi viññāṇaṁ natthi niccaṁ dhuvaṁ sassataṁ avipariṇāmadhammaṁ, tasmā brahmacariyavāso paññāyati sammā dukkhakkhayāya.

But because even this much consciousness is not permanent, everlasting, eternal, not subject to change, therefore the holy life is discerned for the complete ending of suffering.

Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, bhikkhu, rūpaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā”ti?

What do you think is form permanent or impermanent?

“Aniccaṁ, bhante”.

Impermanent, venerable sir.

“Vedanā …

Is feeling...

saññā …

perception...

saṅkhārā …

formations...

viññāṇaṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā”ti?

consciousness permanent or impermanent?

“Aniccaṁ, bhante” …pe…

Impermanent, venerable sir.

“tasmātiha …pe…

Therefore...

evaṁ passaṁ …pe…

seeing thus...

nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātī”ti. Pañcamaṁ.
