Dutiyanoceassādasutta

Yamakavagga Dutiyanoceassādasutta “No cedaṁ, bhikkhave, rūpānaṁ assādo abhavissa, nayidaṁ sattā rūpesu sārajjeyyuṁ.

Disciples, if there were no gratification in forms, beings would not be attached to forms.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi rūpānaṁ assādo, tasmā sattā rūpesu sārajjanti.

But because there is gratification in forms, beings are attached to forms.

No cedaṁ, bhikkhave, rūpānaṁ ādīnavo abhavissa, nayidaṁ sattā rūpesu nibbindeyyuṁ.

If there were no danger in forms, beings would not become disenchanted with forms.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi rūpānaṁ ādīnavo, tasmā sattā rūpesu nibbindanti.

But because there is danger in forms, beings become disenchanted with forms.

No cedaṁ, bhikkhave, rūpānaṁ nissaraṇaṁ abhavissa, nayidaṁ sattā rūpehi nissareyyuṁ.

If there were no escape from forms, beings would not escape from forms.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi rūpānaṁ nissaraṇaṁ, tasmā sattā rūpehi nissaranti.

But because there is an escape from forms, beings escape from forms.

No cedaṁ, bhikkhave, saddānaṁ …

in mental phenomena, beings would not be attached to mental phenomena.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi dhammānaṁ assādo, tasmā sattā dhammesu sārajjanti.

But because there is gratification in mental phenomena, beings are attached to mental phenomena.

No cedaṁ, bhikkhave, dhammānaṁ ādīnavo abhavissa, nayidaṁ sattā dhammesu nibbindeyyuṁ.

Yāvakīvañca, bhikkhave, sattā imesaṁ channaṁ bāhirānaṁ āyatanānaṁ assādañca assādato, ādīnavañca ādīnavato, nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ nābbhaññaṁsu, neva tāva, bhikkhave, sattā sadevakā lokā samārakā sabrahmakā sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya nissaṭā visaññuttā vippamuttā vimariyādīkatena cetasā vihariṁsu.

As long as beings do not know, as they really are, the gratification as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape in the case of these six external bases, they will not be free from the world with its devas, Māras, and Brahmās, from this generation with its recluses and brahmins, its devas and humans.

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, sattā imesaṁ channaṁ bāhirānaṁ āyatanānaṁ assādañca assādato, ādīnavañca ādīnavato, nissaraṇañca nissaraṇato yathābhūtaṁ abbhaññaṁsu, atha, bhikkhave, sattā sadevakā lokā samārakā sabrahmakā sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya nissaṭā visaññuttā vippamuttā vimariyādīkatena cetasā viharantī”ti. Chaṭṭhaṁ.

But when beings know, as they really are, the gratification as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape in the case of these six external bases, then they will be free from the world with its devas, Māras, and Brahmās, from this generation with its recluses and brahmins, its devas and humans, and they will dwell with a mind that is free, detached, released, and unrestricted.
