The First Discourse on the Arising of Suffering

Yamakavagga Paṭhamadukkhuppādasutta “Yo, bhikkhave, cakkhussa uppādo ṭhiti abhinibbatti pātubhāvo, dukkhasseso uppādo, rogānaṁ ṭhiti, jarāmaraṇassa pātubhāvo.

Disciples, the arising, persistence, rebirth, and manifestation of the eye is the arising of suffering, the persistence of diseases, the manifestation of aging and death.

The arising of the ear...

yo ghānassa …

the arising of the nose...

yo jivhāya …

the arising of the tongue...

yo kāyassa …

the arising of the body...

yo manassa uppādo ṭhiti abhinibbatti pātubhāvo, dukkhasseso uppādo, rogānaṁ ṭhiti, jarāmaraṇassa pātubhāvo.

The arising, persistence, rebirth, and manifestation of these six senses are all connected to suffering.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, cakkhussa nirodho vūpasamo atthaṅgamo, dukkhasseso nirodho, rogānaṁ vūpasamo, jarāmaraṇassa atthaṅgamo.

But the cessation, subsiding, and disappearance of the eye is the cessation of suffering, the subsiding of diseases, the disappearance of aging and death.

the cessation of the tongue...

yo manassa nirodho vūpasamo atthaṅgamo, dukkhasseso nirodho, rogānaṁ vūpasamo, jarāmaraṇassa atthaṅgamo”ti. Navamaṁ.
