The Sick

Gilānavagga Dutiyaavijjāpahānasutta Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu …pe…

The Second Discourse on the Abandoning of Ignorance.

Then a certain disciple ... said this:

etadavoca: “atthi nu kho, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahīyati, vijjā uppajjatī”ti?

Is there, venerable sir, one thing by the abandoning of which a disciples ignorance is abandoned and true knowing arises?

“Atthi kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahīyati, vijjā uppajjatī”ti.

There is one thing by the abandoning of which a disciples ignorance is abandoned and true knowing arises.

“Katamo pana, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahīyati, vijjā uppajjatī”ti?

But what, venerable sir, is that one thing by the abandoning of which a disciples ignorance is abandoned and true knowing arises?

“Avijjā kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahīyati, vijjā uppajjatī”ti.

Ignorance is the one thing by the abandoning of which a disciples ignorance is abandoned and true knowing arises.

“Kathaṁ pana, bhante, jānato, kathaṁ passato avijjā pahīyati, vijjā uppajjatī”ti?

But how, venerable sir, does a disciple know and see so that his ignorance is abandoned and true knowing arises?

“Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaṁ hoti: ‘sabbe dhammā nālaṁ abhinivesāyā’ti.

Here a disciple has heard: All things are not worth adhering to.

Evañcetaṁ, bhikkhu, bhikkhuno sutaṁ hoti: ‘sabbe dhammā nālaṁ abhinivesāyā’ti.

When a disciple has heard that all things are not worth adhering to, he directly knows all things.

So sabbaṁ dhammaṁ abhijānāti, sabbaṁ dhammaṁ abhiññāya sabbaṁ dhammaṁ parijānāti, sabbaṁ dhammaṁ pariññāya sabbanimittāni aññato passati, cakkhuṁ aññato passati, rūpe …

Having directly known all things, he fully knows all things. Having fully known all things, he sees all signs differently, the eye differently, forms ...

cakkhuviññāṇaṁ …

eye-consciousness ...

cakkhusamphassaṁ …

eye-contact ...

yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aññato passati …pe…

and whatever feeling arises with eye-contact as condition: whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant: that too he sees differently ...

manaṁ aññato passati, dhamme …

the mind differently, mental phenomena ...

manoviññāṇaṁ …

mind-consciousness ...

manosamphassaṁ …

mind-contact ...

yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aññato passati.

and whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition: whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant: that too he sees differently.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhu, jānato evaṁ passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahīyati, vijjā uppajjatī”ti. Sattamaṁ.

It is in this way that by knowing and seeing thus a disciples ignorance is abandoned and true knowing arises.
