Udāyivagga Taṇhakkhayasutta

Udāyivagga Taṇhakkhayasutta “Yo, bhikkhave, maggo yā paṭipadā taṇhakkhayāya saṁvattati, taṁ maggaṁ taṁ paṭipadaṁ bhāvetha.

Disciples, the path that leads to the cessation of craving, that path should be developed.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, maggo katamā ca paṭipadā taṇhakkhayāya saṁvattati?

What is that path?

Yadidaṁ— satta bojjhaṅgā.

It is the seven factors of enlightenment.

Katame satta?

What are the seven?

Satisambojjhaṅgo …pe…

They are: the factor of mindfulness ...

upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo”ti.

the factor of equanimity.

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā udāyī bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “kathaṁ bhāvitā nu kho, bhante, satta bojjhaṅgā, kathaṁ bahulīkatā taṇhakkhayāya saṁvattantī”ti?

When this was said, the venerable Udāyi said to the Blessed One, How, venerable sir, are the seven factors of enlightenment developed, and how do they lead to the cessation of craving?

“Idha, udāyi, bhikkhu satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ vipulaṁ mahaggataṁ appamāṇaṁ abyāpajjaṁ.

The Blessed One replied, Here, Udāyi, a disciple develops the factor of mindfulness, which is based on seclusion, dispassion, cessation, and the relinquishing of attachment.

Tassa satisambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāvayato vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ vipulaṁ mahaggataṁ appamāṇaṁ abyāpajjaṁ taṇhā pahīyati.

As he develops the factor of mindfulness, which is based on seclusion, dispassion, cessation, and the relinquishing of attachment, craving is abandoned.

Taṇhāya pahānā kammaṁ pahīyati. Kammassa pahānā dukkhaṁ pahīyati …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ vipulaṁ mahaggataṁ appamāṇaṁ abyāpajjaṁ.

When craving ceases, volitional fabrication ceases; With the abandonment of volitional fabrication, suffering ceases ...

He develops the factor of equanimity, which is based on seclusion, dispassion, cessation, and the relinquishing of attachment.

Tassa upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ bhāvayato vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ vipulaṁ mahaggataṁ appamāṇaṁ abyāpajjaṁ taṇhā pahīyati taṇhāya pahānā kammaṁ pahīyati.

As he develops the factor of equanimity, which is based on seclusion, dispassion, cessation, and the relinquishing of attachment, craving is abandoned. When craving ceases, volitional fabrication ceases; With the abandonment of volitional fabrication, suffering ceases.

Kammassa pahānā dukkhaṁ pahīyati. Iti kho, udāyi, taṇhakkhayā kammakkhayo, kammakkhayā dukkhakkhayo”ti. Chaṭṭhaṁ.

Thus, Udāyi, through the cessation of craving, there is the cessation of action, and through the cessation of action, there is the cessation of suffering.
