Samudayasutta

Amatavagga Samudayasutta “Catunnaṁ, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca desessāmi.

I will teach the origin and passing away of the four dwellings of mindfulness.

Taṁ suṇātha.

Listen to this.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, kāyassa samudayo?

And what is the origin of the body?

Āhārasamudayā kāyassa samudayo; āhāranirodhā kāyassa atthaṅgamo.

The origin of the body is from food; with the cessation of food, there is the passing away of the body.

Phassasamudayā vedanānaṁ samudayo; phassanirodhā vedanānaṁ atthaṅgamo.

From the origin of contact is the origin of feelings; with the cessation of contact, there is the passing away of feelings.

Nāmarūpasamudayā cittassa samudayo; nāmarūpanirodhā cittassa atthaṅgamo.

From the origin of name-and-form is the origin of mind; with the cessation of name-and-form, there is the passing away of mind.

Manasikārasamudayā dhammānaṁ samudayo; manasikāranirodhā dhammānaṁ atthaṅgamo”ti. Dutiyaṁ.

From the origin of attention is the origin of mental phenomena; with the cessation of attention, there is the passing away of mental phenomena.
