Saṁyutta Nikāya 54.9 1.

Vesālīsutta

Ekadhammavagga Vesālīsutta Evaṁ me sutaṁ— ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was staying in Vesālī, in the Great Wood, at the Hall with the Peaked Roof.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhūnaṁ anekapariyāyena asubhakathaṁ katheti, asubhāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, asubhabhāvanāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati.

Now at that time, the Blessed One was teaching the disciples in various ways about the unattractiveness of the body, speaking in praise of the unattractiveness, speaking in praise of the development of the perception of unattractiveness.

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “icchāmahaṁ, bhikkhave, aḍḍhamāsaṁ paṭisallīyituṁ.

Then the Blessed One addressed the disciples, saying, I wish to remain in seclusion for half a month.

Nāmhi kenaci upasaṅkamitabbo, aññatra ekena piṇḍapātanīhārakenā”ti.

No one should approach me except for one who brings me alms food.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paṭissutvā nāssudha koci bhagavantaṁ upasaṅkamati, aññatra ekena piṇḍapātanīhārakena.

Very well, venerable sir, the disciples replied to the Blessed One. And no one approached the Blessed One except for one who brought him alms food.

Atha kho te bhikkhū: “bhagavā anekapariyāyena asubhakathaṁ katheti, asubhāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, asubhabhāvanāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsatī”ti anekākāravokāraṁ asubhabhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti.

Then the disciples, thinking, The Blessed One is teaching us in various ways about the unattractiveness of the body, speaking in praise of the unattractiveness, speaking in praise of the development of the perception of unattractiveness, engaged in the practice of developing the perception of unattractiveness in various ways.

Te iminā kāyena aṭṭīyamānā harāyamānā jigucchamānā satthahārakaṁ pariyesanti.

They became distressed, ashamed, and disgusted with their own bodies, and sought a knife to end their lives.

Dasapi bhikkhū ekāhena satthaṁ āharanti, vīsampi …pe…

Ten disciples brought a knife in one day, twenty disciples...

tiṁsampi bhikkhū ekāhena satthaṁ āharanti.

thirty disciples brought a knife in one day.

Atha kho bhagavā tassa aḍḍhamāsassa accayena paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ āmantesi: “kiṁ nu kho, ānanda, tanubhūto viya bhikkhusaṅgho”ti?

Then, at the end of that half month, the Blessed One emerged from seclusion and addressed the Venerable Ānanda, Why does the community of disciples appear diminished, Ānanda?

“Tathā hi pana, bhante, ‘bhagavā bhikkhūnaṁ anekapariyāyena asubhakathaṁ katheti, asubhāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, asubhabhāvanāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsatī’ti anekākāravokāraṁ asubhabhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti.

Venerable sir, the Blessed One has been teaching the disciples in various ways about the unattractiveness of the body, speaking in praise of the unattractiveness, speaking in praise of the development of the perception of unattractiveness.

Te iminā kāyena aṭṭīyamānā harāyamānā jigucchamānā satthahārakaṁ pariyesanti.

They became distressed, ashamed, and disgusted with their own bodies, and sought a knife to end their lives.

Dasapi bhikkhū ekāhena satthaṁ āharanti, vīsampi bhikkhū …

Ten disciples brought a knife in one day, twenty disciples...

tiṁsampi bhikkhū ekāhena satthaṁ āharanti.

thirty disciples brought a knife in one day.

Sādhu, bhante, bhagavā aññaṁ pariyāyaṁ ācikkhatu yathāyaṁ bhikkhusaṅgho aññāya saṇṭhaheyyā”ti.

It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach another method so that this community of disciples might be established in another way.

“Tenahānanda, yāvatikā bhikkhū vesāliṁ upanissāya viharanti te sabbe upaṭṭhānasālāyaṁ sannipātehī”ti.

Therefore, Ānanda, gather all the disciples who are staying in Vesālī in the assembly hall.

“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato paṭissutvā yāvatikā bhikkhū vesāliṁ upanissāya viharanti te sabbe upaṭṭhānasālāyaṁ sannipātetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “sannipatito, bhante, bhikkhusaṅgho.

Very well, venerable sir, the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One, and he gathered all the disciples who were staying in Vesālī in the assembly hall. Then he approached the Blessed One, and having approached, he said to the Blessed One, The community of disciples has assembled, venerable sir.

Yassadāni, bhante, bhagavā kālaṁ maññatī”ti.

Let the Blessed One do as he sees fit.

Atha kho bhagavā yena upaṭṭhānasālā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.

Then the Blessed One approached the assembly hall, and having approached, he sat down on the prepared seat.

Nisajja kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “ayampi kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi bhāvito bahulīkato santo ceva paṇīto ca asecanako ca sukho ca vihāro uppannuppanne ca pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti.

Once, the Blessed One addressed the disciples: Disciples, this concentration through mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, is both peaceful and sublime, an unadulterated and pleasant dwelling, and it causes the arising of unwholesome states to disappear immediately.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gimhānaṁ pacchime māse ūhataṁ rajojallaṁ, tamenaṁ mahāakālamegho ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti; evameva kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi bhāvito bahulīkato santo ceva paṇīto ca asecanako ca sukho ca vihāro uppannuppanne ca pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti.

Just as in the last month of the hot season, a great rain cloud causes the dust and dirt to disappear immediately;

In the same way this concentration through mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, is both peaceful and sublime, an unadulterated and pleasant dwelling, and it causes the arising of unwholesome states to disappear immediately.

Kathaṁ bhāvito ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi kathaṁ bahulīkato santo ceva paṇīto ca asecanako ca sukho ca vihāro uppannuppanne ca pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasameti?

And how is this concentration through mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so that it is both peaceful and sublime, an unadulterated and pleasant dwelling, and it causes the arising of unwholesome states to disappear immediately?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.

Here a disciple goes to the forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, sits down, crosses his legs, holds his body erect, and establishes mindfulness in the breath.

So satova assasati, satova passasati …pe…

Ever mindful, he breathes in; ever mindful, he breathes out…

‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

He trains himself, I will breathe in experiencing relinquishment; he trains himself, I will breathe out experiencing relinquishment.

Evaṁ bhāvito kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi evaṁ bahulīkato santo ceva paṇīto ca asecanako ca sukho ca vihāro uppannuppanne ca pāpake akusale dhamme ṭhānaso antaradhāpeti vūpasametī”ti. Navamaṁ.

Thus developed and cultivated this concentration through mindfulness of breathing is both peaceful and sublime, an unadulterated and pleasant dwelling, and it causes the arising of unwholesome states to disappear immediately.
