Saṁyutta Nikāya 55.53 6.

Dhammadinna Sutta

Sappaññavagga Dhammadinnasutta Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā bārāṇasiyaṁ viharati isipatane migadāye.

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Benares, at the Deer Park in Isipatana.

Atha kho dhammadinno upāsako pañcahi upāsakasatehi saddhiṁ yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then, the lay follower Dhammadinna, along with five hundred lay followers, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho dhammadinno upāsako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “ovadatu no, bhante, bhagavā; anusāsatu no, bhante, bhagavā yaṁ amhākaṁ assa dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā”ti.

While seated to one side, the lay follower Dhammadinna said to the Blessed One, Venerable sir, may the Blessed One advise us, may the Blessed One instruct us, for our long-term welfare and happiness.

“Tasmātiha vo, dhammadinna, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘ye te suttantā tathāgatabhāsitā gambhīrā gambhīratthā lokuttarā suññatapaṭisaṁyuttā te kālena kālaṁ upasampajja viharissāmā’ti.

Therefore, Dhammadinna, you should train yourselves thus: From time to time, we will enter and dwell upon those discourses spoken by the Tathāgata that are deep, profound in meaning, transcendent, and connected with emptiness.

Evañhi vo, dhammadinna, sikkhitabban”ti.

Thus should you train yourselves, Dhammadinna.

“Na kho netaṁ, bhante, sukaraṁ amhehi puttasambādhasayanaṁ ajjhāvasantehi kāsikacandanaṁ paccanubhontehi mālāgandhavilepanaṁ dhārayantehi jātarūparajataṁ sādiyantehi— ye te suttantā tathāgatabhāsitā gambhīrā gambhīratthā lokuttarā suññatapaṭisaṁyuttā te kālena kālaṁ upasampajja viharituṁ.

Venerable sir, it is not easy for us, living in a home crowded with children, enjoying the use of sandalwood from Kāsi, wearing garlands, scents, and unguents, and accepting gold and silver, to enter and dwell upon those discourses spoken by the Tathāgata that are deep, profound in meaning, transcendent, and connected with emptiness. Venerable sir, may the Blessed One teach us further Dhamma while we remain established in the five precepts.

Tesaṁ no, bhante, bhagavā amhākaṁ pañcasu sikkhāpadesu ṭhitānaṁ uttaridhammaṁ desetū”ti. “Tasmātiha vo, dhammadinna, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatā bhavissāma— itipi so bhagavā …pe…

Therefore, Dhammadinna, you should train yourselves thus: We will be endowed with unwavering confidence in the Tathāgata: Indeed, the Blessed One is the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, the Teacher of gods and humans, the Tathāgata, the Blessed One.

satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Dhamme …pe…

We will be endowed with unwavaring confidence in the Dhamma...

saṅghe …pe…

in the Sangha...

ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgatā bhavissāma akhaṇḍehi …pe…

We will be endowed with the virtues dear to the noble ones, unbroken...

samādhisaṁvattanikehī’ti.

conducive to concentration.

Evañhi vo, dhammadinna, sikkhitabban”ti.

Thus should you train yourselves, Dhammadinna.

“Yānimāni, bhante, bhagavatā cattāri sotāpattiyaṅgāni desitāni, saṁvijjante dhammā amhesu, mayañca tesu dhammesu sandissāma. Mayañhi, bhante, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatā— itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. Dhamme …pe…

Venerable sir, the four factors of stream-entry that have been taught by the Blessed One are present in us, and we are seen in those qualities. For we, venerable sir, are endowed with unwavering confidence in the Tathāgata: Indeed, the Blessed One is the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, the Teacher of gods and humans, the Tathāgata, the Blessed One. We are endowed with unwavaring confidence in the Dhamma...

in the Sangha...

ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgatā akhaṇḍehi …pe…

We are endowed with the virtues dear to the noble ones, unbroken...

samādhisaṁvattanikehī”ti.

conducive to concentration.

“Lābhā vo, dhammadinna, suladdhaṁ vo, dhammadinna.

Fortunate are you, Dhammadinna, well-gained are you, Dhammadinna.

Sotāpattiphalaṁ tumhehi byākatan”ti. Tatiyaṁ.

You have declared the fruit of stream-entry.
