Disciples, if someone were to say, I will realize the noble truth of suffering as it truly is, without knowing it...

dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’ti— netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ kūṭāgārassa heṭṭhimaṁ gharaṁ akaritvā uparimaṁ gharaṁ āropessāmī’ti— netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ anabhisamecca …pe…

and I will realize the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering as it truly is, without knowing it, and I will bring about the cessation of suffering: this would not be a valid position.

Just as if someone were to say, I will raise the upper house without having built the lower house: this would not be a valid position. In the same way, if someone were to say, I will realize the noble truth of suffering as it truly is, without knowing it...

dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ anabhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’ti— netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

and I will realize the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering as it truly is, without knowing it, and I will bring about the cessation of suffering: this would not be a valid position.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ abhisamecca …pe…

However, if someone were to say, I will realize the noble truth of suffering as it truly is, with knowing...

dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ abhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’ti— ṭhānametaṁ vijjati. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ kūṭāgārassa heṭṭhimaṁ gharaṁ karitvā uparimaṁ gharaṁ āropessāmī’ti— ṭhānametaṁ vijjati; evameva kho, bhikkhave, yo evaṁ vadeyya: ‘ahaṁ dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ abhisamecca …pe…

and I will realize the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering as it truly is, with knowing, and I will bring about the cessation of suffering: this would be a valid position. Just as if someone were to say, I will build the lower house and then raise the upper house: this would be a valid position.

In the same way, if someone were to say, I will realize the noble truth of suffering as it truly is, with knowing...

dukkhanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ ariyasaccaṁ yathābhūtaṁ abhisamecca sammā dukkhassantaṁ karissāmī’ti— ṭhānametaṁ vijjati.

and I will realize the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering as it truly is, with knowing, and I will bring about the cessation of suffering: this would be a valid position.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo …pe…

Therefore one should cultivate the knowing of this is suffering...

‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti. Catutthaṁ.

and cultivate the knowing of this is the path leading to the cessation of suffering.
