Saṁyutta Nikāya 7.16 2.

The Discourse on Opposition

Upāsakavagga Paccanīkasutta Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Originating in Sāvatthī.

Tena kho pana samayena paccanīkasāto nāma brāhmaṇo sāvatthiyaṁ paṭivasati.

At that time, a brahmin named Paccanīkasāta was living in Sāvatthī.

Atha kho paccanīkasātassa brāhmaṇassa etadahosi: “yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ.

Then it occurred to Paccanīkasāta the brahmin: Why don't I approach the ascetic Gotama?

Yaṁ yadeva samaṇo gotamo bhāsissati taṁ tadevassāhaṁ paccanīkāssan”ti.

Whatever the ascetic Gotama says, I will oppose it.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā abbhokāse caṅkamati.

At that time, the Blessed One was walking in the open air.

Atha kho paccanīkasāto brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ caṅkamantaṁ etadavoca: “bhaṇa samaṇadhamman”ti.

Then Paccanīkasāta the brahmin approached the Blessed One; having approached, he said to the Blessed One who was walking: Speak, ascetic.

“Na paccanīkasātena, suvijānaṁ subhāsitaṁ; Upakkiliṭṭhacittena, sārambhabahulena ca.

It is not easy for one with an opposing mind, to know well-spoken words;

With a mind corrupted, and full of hostility.

Yo ca vineyya sārambhaṁ, appasādañca cetaso; Āghātaṁ paṭinissajja, sa ve jaññā subhāsitan”ti.

But one who has dispelled hostility, and has a calm mind; Having abandoned resentment, that one can know well-spoken words.

Evaṁ vutte, paccanīkasāto brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…

Having been spoken thus, Paccanīkasāta the brahmin said to the Blessed One: Excellent, Master Gotama, excellent, Master Gotama...

upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

May Master Gotama consider me a lay follower from this day forth, who has gone for refuge for life.
